hey guys i have been thinking about buying a ss. scope for my 700p .300mag and i was wondering what the clearance from scope to barrel should be,would a set of leupold high rings do the job or is that to high.

Re: swfa ss. 10x42 sidefocus

IMO, i like the scope as close to the barrel as possible. Numerous reasons, improved cheek weld, closer to the bore of the barrel, etc etc.

I suggest low rings. I used both Burris Exteme lows and US Optics lows that both worked fine, and that was with a very heavy contour barrel (Krieger #18 HV)

Its a great scope. You'll love it.

It really is a personal thing that depends on your cheek weld. The old saying was get the objective as close to the barrel as possible but this is not always the case. Generally speaking you are fine with a set of low rings when your objective is 42mm.

thanks for the info i will check that out this spring. i nkow the the i have is very accurate and just want a scope that preforms as good as my rifle.

Re: swfa ss. 10x42 sidefocus

I have shot thousands of rounds through a SS and many more by my students......on a lightly custom lightweight LTR. I have real good luck with the medium rings of high quality. I like the Burris and Warne and Badger. I hand lapped a a set of Burris tactical rings when I got my first SS and it still doesn't have ringmarks after a couple thousand rounds. Low rings will work especially if you use a HS Precision Facotry type remington stock. But if you want to cheek piece or the rifle will be shot by different people medium rings fit the bill for about every shooter and stock. Derek

well to sum it up for you guys i have the standard hs stock that all the 700p's come with,i'm the only shooter of this rifle, i'm fussy about that.my bases are just the plain weaver bases, nothing fancy.

Re: swfa ss. 10x42 sidefocus

the other question i have for you guys is how well do these scopes hold up to adverse weather conditions, rain, snow, cold weather. do i have to worry about rain or moisture getting inside the turrets, because i'm a hunter and the weather is not an issue for me i'm out there rain sleet or snow.
