I am sure this question has been asked a few times and some of you are tired of answering it. I did a couple quick searches and didn't really find what I am looking for.

I am in the process of building my first real precision type rifle and want to build it in a fashion that I will not have to switch parts in the near future, thus saving me money better spent on ammo and training.

Just so everyone in this thread is aware of my capability now and my intentions for this rifle I will try to explain as well as I can.

I have served active army for some time now (see sig line) and have become very intimate with the AR series rifle. I have used the 20in DMR rifle and attended the US Army Designated Marksmen Program held at Ft. Campbell. While serving most of my time as a grunt with an M4 and any optic from EOtech to Aimpoint to ACOG or even an ELCAN, I did get some valuable trigger time on the M24 and 21 series sniper systems. All of my trigger time on both systems was very informal but informative and necessary being in a scout platoon. I developed a pretty good sense in hold over at distance but lack the knowledge of actual scope adjustments at distance.

I am looking to build a rifle that I can shoot from 300-500 meters comfortably, and sometimes stretch its legs to 800 or maybe beyond. I dont plan to be shooting any sort of competition any time soon. My base gun I am starting out with is a Remington 700 AAC-SD. It has already been fitted with a harris 6-9 bipod as well as a Badger 20 MOA scope mounting rail. I currently have the factory stock and intend on keeping this for some time while I develop my skill. I am not the kind of person that trys to buy skill with fancy products. However, I do understand that a more ergonomic stock may suit me well once I outgrow the factory one.

NOW ONTO MY REAL QUESTION.

I am looking for cheap glass to 1) hold me over until I can afford S&B or the like and 2) be my learning piece that I am not afraid to get dirty with.

I am pretty familiar with the SWFA (actually tasco at the time) line of scopes. We used these exclusively on out M21 M14s. It was a fixed 10X scope and from what I saw, they were very rugged and effective. I hear that the quality has only gotten better since SWFA has taken the reigns on the scope production.

I am looking to buy the 299.00 rear focus version of the scope and a decent set of leupy/NF/badger scope rings with the setup.

My question is, Are there any other $300 dollar scopes that I should look at before dropping the dime on this one. I understand that $300 is not a lot in the world of good glass but in my experience the SS far exceeds its price.

Any help would be appreciated.

What say you SH?

Mike

Re: SWFA SS vs ?

get the SS for $300 and you can usually resell it when the time comes for the NF, S&B, etc (if you even want to sell it!) for close to $225-250

Very good investment and they track well and are very tough

Just my $.02

Re: SWFA SS vs ?

Nothing bad to say about SS line BUT I highly urge you to look at the Falcon Menace as well.

They run 380.00 from RW Snyder and I think SWFA is selling them now as well. Check the FS section here and you can find them used in the 300.00 range.

4-14x FFP MIL/MIL and a coupple of ret options. Many find line substentions much easier to use accuratly over dots or footballs, I beleive SS scopes only offer dots. Also it should be noted that they ship with sunshade and flip up caps.

Re: SWFA SS vs ?

It is hard to beat the SWFA SS line at their price because you are buying from the manufacture and don't pay several layers of markup and overhead that you have to pay for other brands. I bought the 10X eight years ago as a learning scope for a Remington PSS and it is still on the rifle. When/if I do upgrade it will be for a SWFA SS 10X HD.

If I may make a suggestion, you may want to look at the SWFA SS 3-9X42. The Hide has an add that gives a 10% off code and with the 3-9 you would be learning with mil/mil rather than mil/moa. All SWFA SS scopes hold their value and I own two of the SS 3-9x42 scopes and there is nothing that seel for less than twice their cost that I would replace them with, excellent value.

Re: SWFA SS vs ?

Bushnell Elite 3200 10x mil/mil... I personall like the SWFA SS very much, but as a new shooter you might want to start with mil/mil.... another mil/mil option in your price range is the Weaver Tactical Grand Slam 3-10x40 mil/mil from Midwayusa

Re: SWFA SS vs ?

For $540 ($599- the 10% Hide Discount) the price of the SS 3x9-42 is really hard to beat. I know it is a little over the $300 price range but every so often they come up for sale here on the Hide...
