switching from 208 amax to ?

im just curious as to what you folks that have given up on the 208 amax are switching to. bullet will mainly for target out to 1000 with thrown hunting thrown in. hunting shots 500 max out of a 30-06

im leaning toward the accubond

I want to try the 208's. I just ordered the 178's. I did on the other hand work up a load for the 165 gameking and it shot great. I dont know though how often I will use this load, but it worked.

The ballistics on the 208 look pretty good for 1000 yard shooting. I am a fan of amaxs in other calibers and if I shot 308 or 3006 I would probably be shooting the 208.

I can't say that I've read a lot of posts of people switching from the 208. Most that Ive read seem to be switching to it.

I shoot the 208's in my 300WM, but since they're unobtanium now I just finished up a load with 210 Bergers. I like the Bergers better actually, but I mostly shoot the 208's because they're cheap, & perform just as well. Now if I could only see the boxes I have on backorder...

If your main emphasis is hunting, I would agree with you. The 200 AB is an excellent (albeit expensive) bullet.

But for 1000 yd. paper or steel look to the 210 Berger or one of the 210 JLK's (short boattail, long boattail). All three will kick the stuffing out of anything but a 208 when it comes to wind.

i would love to use the 208 amax, but this is for a new gun. ive been trying to locate amaxes for 6 months and to be honest i dont want to do load development on a bullet that will be this hard to fine. its a shame to hornady makes a fine product. i dont know what they have to gain by not producing these bullets but there must be somthing.

Barnes has a new tipped 200gr that should get the job done and the 200gr Accubonds are always a croud pleasing favorite and I know the 210SMK's shoot very well but I'm not sure how good they would be as a hunting bullet.

If this is a situation like I ran into with the 6mm 105 amaxs, I think Obama caused a run on reloading supplies. I was looking for the 105s and everyone was sold out. Called Hornady in September and they hadn't made a run in over a year. Well they told me they were running the amaxs in early november. I received my last backorder last week.

So it may be a matter of all stock has been sold since the last run.

Call Hornady. They were very helpful and told me when I should expect backorders to be filled. I told them who I had ordered from and Hornady said that those 2 companies were at the top of the list to receive new shipments.

Also, if enough people call about the 208s, it may bump them up for a next run. Who knows?

i think barnes bullets are great, but i dont want to use them for target. they are just so expensive i hate to shoot anything but fur

We've been calling for months. They've been SLIPPING the schedule, not bringing it in.

Barnes has a line of Match Bullets coming out in 2011

Match Burners ?
22 cal 52gr FB 69 and 85gr BT
6.5 cal 140gr BT
30 cal 155 and 175gr BT.

And some other new bullet LRX Series
in 7mm and 30 cal.

Tipped TSX in 22 cal and other calibers too.

I'm running 210 Sierra Match Kings, or 200 SMK if I can't find the 210's. Fuck the 208 hype and the games you must play to obtain them.

You guys probably know this, but it bears restating. This load in the wrong brass with the wrong COAL could be overpressure. I've found really large variances in volume of 300WM brass.

Seating depth, brass volume, bore diameter, distance to the lands, temperature, powder lot, primer, bullet lot, all have an effect on pressure.

ANYTIME you see a recipe, start really low and work up to it to verify pressures in YOUR rifle. I'd like to see you guys continue to shoot with two eyes.

Usually I load
200 grain Sierra match kings
H4351sc powder (I will get the exact amount from my load book later.)
Win mag primer and Nosler brass

My rifle stats are listed in my signature.

This is the same load Im using for my AWSM, 2800fps. All Hornady brass, CCI 250 primers. No pres signs. Shot a 10inch group of 5@1000 a while back (Good wind calls). I now buy all my amax's in bulk (1000rds)now because of the shortages. As I do with all my reloading supplies. Guys like me are probably part of the reason for the shortages lol. If I ran out, next on the list would be Berger 210's.

No problem. It's easy to see when someone else posts it.

I sometimes catch myself tossing load data around and think about it later.

And here's something else to think about with regard to load development. I recently found a load with Winchester brass that absolutely shoots the lights out. One ragged hole at distances out to 300 yds. and very-sub moa out to as far as I can shoot well. NO signs of pressure at all. I went to load them this last time (3rd firing) and some of the primers literally fell in. Now, I know that some of this stuff got fired when it was 90 deg F., BUT... there were no pressure signs.

Moral of the story is... If I had shared that recipe with someone when I first discovered it, now I know it's not safe... we just need to be careful when posting load data AND when taking load data from others and nobody gets hurt.
