Switching grain weights

Ok, let me start out by saying that, though I have been shooting for a long time, I am relatively new to LR. I was told by a friend that once you choose a grain weight, stick to it. I have been primarily shooting 168 grain, but is there any problem with shooting with different grains, or will that cause problems? I am currently shooting Federal Gold Match 168G .308, but I am thinking about shooting some different types of ammunition just to see the difference.

Of course I know that since I spent so much building my rifle, I should only put quality ammunition through it. But will shooting cheaper ammo have any negative effects on the gun, or is it just an accuracy thing? Should I avoid steel casings?

Thanks!

Re: Switching grain weights

I don't see any problems with changing bullet weights except maybe having to rezero or figuring out your come ups.
Steel cases will usually leave more carbon in the chamber depending on the grade of steel and the ability to completely seal in the chamber. At least those are my thoughts, but I could be wrong.
