TAB Gear QA Sling

A few months ago our team was patrolling through a moderately wooded area for two subjects. I was originally deployed with another sniper and tasked with over watch of a tree line. After a short period of time the two of us were called into the woods and started a bounding over watch to assist the main searching element. Hours later when the operation ended my biceps, shoulders and forearms were toasted from patrolling with the rifle at a low to high ready. This was nothing new to me, I felt it before but like the many times before I began thinking there must be a better way to utilize the a sniper rifle. I had thought of just going to a Vickers VCAS sling and being done with it but there is too strong of a need for a loop sling.

For the past few years I have used a TAB Elite Sling on my precision rifles. If you are not familiar with a the TAB series of slings they are unique. The TAB slings are simple, rugged and allow the shooter to utilize a loop sling fast. The draw back to the original TAB slings and other types of precision rifle slings was their inability to adjust the sling length for various carry modes in a timely manner. In the past I have found myself needing a sling that can be cross body slung in front of me or on my back but with the ability to utilize a loop sling. I also want wide webbing to help distribute the weight of a precision rifle. So every month or so I call Tony Burkes at TAB Gear and whine about needing a quick adjustment TAB sling. The past few months he assured me he had something and I would see it at Shot Show 2011.

Well I got my hands on two of them at Shot and smuggled them back to the frozen Ohio Tundra. Since I got back from Shot I have logged about 12 hours of range and dry practice with the new TAB QA (Quick Adjust)Sling. The sling is built with the same 1.5 inch webbing and hardware as the standard TAB sling but with a robust adjustment similar to the ones found on ALICE packs and VTAC sling but the adjustment on the TAB sling is a 1.5 inch adjustment.

I have both assaulter and sniper backgrounds, with that in mind I like to adopt the mindset of knowing how to run a precision rifle like a carbine and a carbine like a precision rifle if need be. I am not saying that these weapon systems should play dual roles, I am saying a good assaulter can push a carbine to the point of being precision rifle-esque and likewise a good sniper or DM should have the ability to be run a precision rifle like a carbine in certain instances. For the precision rifle to work in the manner I described above the sling needs to play a broader role than just a over the shoulder carry strap and loop sling. I constantly find the need to cross body sling a precision rifle in order to perform other tasks but the standard precision rifle sling today leave the rifle flopping on your back or chest and makes the carry uncomfortable.

With the TAB sling the shooter can carry the rifle cross body slung like a carbine and still utilize the loop sling. The shooter can also adjust the sling quickly to move the rifle cross body muzzle up or down and snug the sling so that the rifle is held as tight to the body as necessary. The TAB QA also allows the shooter to quickly transition to a handgun.

Re: TAB Gear QA Sling

Many of the drills I ran were in the spirit of transitions and utilizing the loop sling from the cross body muzzle down position.

Transitions were a breeze.

Shooting from standing, kneeling, seated and even prone (no bipod) utilizing a loop sling was not only easy but the results down range were excellent. All of these positions were done with the rifle cross body slung muzzle down.

The drill I ended with was 2 rounds from standing, kneeling, seated and prone all with loop sling and no additional support. I did this drill a few times keeping all but one round in a 6 inch circle. The one I dropped near the 7 o'clock edge of the target. I called it as soon as I pressed the trigger from the standing position.

I also shot one group as fast as I possibly could from the prone and a loop sling. It was 5 rounds in 15 seconds and I started slung up standing prior to dropping into the prone position. Keep in mind I practiced this a few times but this was my best group.

I do not like a one size fits all idea so I will not say this sling is a great idea on any weapon. It is my opinion that the TAB QA sling is intended for use on a precision rifle. Military, LE, Hunters, Target Shooters and Competition Shooters will all find value in this sling for the precision rifle. Some will put it on a carbine and will be fine with it. I messed around a bit with it on a few carbines but the carbine is a different animal with a different job. My carbines will continue to wear Vickers VCAS and Viking VTAC slings for that very reason.

I will continue to play with this sling and post more when necessary but do yourself a favor and pick one up, you will not be disappointed. As a disclaimer, I do not pull a pay check from TAB Gear. I have been a friend of Tony's before TAB existed. I do on occasion instruct for Rifles Only who is affiliated with TAB Gear. I am endorsing TAB Gear because it works and I believe in it.

Re: TAB Gear QA Sling

Thank you for the review Andrew.

We will be changing three things from the sling you see in Cowboy's pictures.

The user will be able to change out the swivels himself, the back swivel will not be sewn in.

There will be a stop sewn into the main webbing to keep the end from pulling up into the quick adjust buckle when the sling is loosened all the way.

The one inch grab webbing sewn to the quick adjust buckle will be shortened, and made of a contrasting color.

I'm currently waiting on the adjusters to arrive so we have very little inventory built up at this time. Please wait until we get inventory sorted before you try to place your orders. Feel free to send Lisa an email if you would like to get on the list for when inventory becomes available. I expect a couple of weeks at the latest.

Re: TAB Gear QA Sling

Great writeup CB. I too have had the same issues with the TAB sling and the need to tighten/loosen when doing tasks like climbing ladders and fast roping. I bought several of Tony's slings for my agency last year an quickly realized the need for what Tony came up with. At Shot I was heading to the RO booth to drop the bomb on Tony with a new project he just had to do to upgrade his sling...well, Tony beat me to it and my chin about hit the ground when he showed the upgrade to me. It was exactly what I was going to propose. Way to stay ahead of the guys who need this stuff Tony.

This is good stuff guys!

Re: TAB Gear QA Sling

Quick question. Does the "tail" get longer or shorter when adjusting the sling like the Viking VTAC or does the slider adjust without changing the length of the tail like on the Vickers VCAS? I use a Vickers VCAS on my shotgun at work and a Gear Sector 2pt on my carbine. I much prefer the Vickers adjustment system as the tail does not change length when I loosen or tighten the sling.

Re: TAB Gear QA Sling

The tail gets longer like the VTAC... This is not my preference but to keep the loop sling and ease of use I believe this was the best option.

From what I understand regarding availability, there is a limited supply right now but the TAB factory is running full force to meet the demand.

Re: TAB Gear QA Sling

Tburkes...

Could you add the Quick release buckle on the buttstock end (like your current sling)??? It would let people with different attachment methods swap stuff around like they do now.

It really makes it nice to get out of the sling quickly in many positions, I use it all the time.

If you can do this, I need three of these.

Re: TAB Gear QA Sling

I took the slider from a VCAS Victory and used sling material to make a "Bolt Gun" model VCAS. Allowed me to adjust from swivel to swivel, sling is pulled tight for storage and can be quickly adjusted out for use by all sizes.

Re: TAB Gear QA Sling

how can it be comfortable with the bolt stabbing you in the back?.. im curious because i have a similar sling and dont use it because i cant find one comfortable way to carry the gun on my chest or my back...

if the swivel studs are on the bottom of the stock the gun just rolls over once put on your back flipping the bolt side into your back... i think i need to put studs on the side of the stock...

Re: TAB Gear QA Sling

I got my supply of buckles in yesterday, but have been red lined with other orders lately, so I haven't had a chance to build inventory yet.

Availability, just as soon as I can get some made and down to RO. If you'd like to email Lisa with your request she'll put you on the list for them just as soon as they're ready to go.

hellbender, yes sir, I can do that, no problem. There'll be a small price difference, but it's easily done.

mark5pt56, that's great I'm proud for you.

Thanks Jason, and Jay, I'm glad you guys like them.

Stay tuned Iggy, I'll let everyone know here just as soon as we're good to go.

Quickdraw40, I was asked this several times at SHOT. If you look at the pics above you'll see that the webbing on both sides of the adjustment slider are all sewn in, so in this configuration you can't convert an existing TAB GEAR sling. We'll be working on a version that has a male portion of a Fastex buckle sewn in where the the quick adjust is now. That will allow you to purchase the "back section" of the sling and simply install it in your sling now and you'll have the quick adjust feature.

kentactic, You've just answered your own question. Attachment points are relatively easy to install yourself.
