TAC in 308...and TAC in 223

I've been using TAC in some 223 - 75 amax loads, (23.4 gr - 2674 fps median V) and while it delivers nice groupings, the stuff seems to be super dirty. I started using it because it meters more consistantly than stock powders in my dillon 550.

I also would like to know if anyone has been using it in 308 loads with 165 grain, or 175 grain loads?

Re: TAC in 308...and TAC in 223

It's been very clean for me. I use it in my 308 loads and 24 inch Bartlein. Been running 43 grains behind a 175 SMK with Lapua barss. I don't have a Chrono, but works well with my Leupy M3 175 / 308 BDC.

Re: TAC in 308...and TAC in 223

Ball type powders may tend toward dirtier fouling consequences when used at lower load pressures/densities. The carbon fouing is generally leftover graphite from kernel coatings, and doesn't burn off/blow away as well at lower pressures and temperatures.

This is usually not such a bad thing, because the graphite accumulation works similar to moly, but is easier to remove from the bore when you clean it. I find that plain old Hoppe's #9 is very effective for carbon removal, as long as you get it distributed well (with a brush, and nylon works fine for this) and let it soak (as long as you like, Hoppe's #9 shouldn't harm the bore on long soaks). It will also work well (if slower) to remove copper.

I shoot 23.9 grains of TAC with Win cases and 77 grain SMK. About 100% suppressed. No issue of inordanate amount of dirt.
Meters perfectly and accuracy is Sub .5 MOA to 600.

What rifle and speed? I'm guessing bolt. I've been thinking of going to TAC when I finish my Varget or just changing over. I'm getting 2700 FPS with 24 grains of Varget in my AR.

Re: TAC in 308...and TAC in 223

I have a 44gr TAC load for the 168gr .308 bullets. That shoots beautifully in my friend's SOCOM.

For .223, I have a 23.6gr TAC load for the 69gr, 23.8gr TAC for 62 gr TSX and 24.4gr TAC for 60gr Nosler Partition. All three shoot around 0.5MOA out my AR.

Re: TAC in 308...and TAC in 223

Thanks for the info fellas, looks like the 223 loads are the same I had luck with. I'm going to try the 308 today.

Re: TAC in 308...and TAC in 223

I shoot 41gr TAC under 175smk with CCI BR2 and Laupa brass out of a 20" AR-10 and they are all sub-moa - 2650fps.

Hope this helps -

John~

Re: TAC in 308...and TAC in 223

I use tac in both my AR15 and savage 308. In the AR I use 24gn under a 75 bthp for 2705 fps avg with 18" inch barrel. In my 308 I use 44 gns under a 168smk 2807 fps avg with 26" barrel, shoots great. 49.3 gns with a 125gn nosler ballistic tip at 3200 fps, great antelope round

What's the oal your using?

I'm loading for a LMT MWS. I assume I can go with standard OAL like factory rounds with the amax 175 gr or the 165 gr gilding rounds.

Re: TAC in 308...and TAC in 223

Anyone having luck with 75 AMAX and Tac. Care to share your loads, not finding a lot of data.

Re: TAC in 308...and TAC in 223

Finally got back to this...I am having very good luck with this load in 308.

TAC....

5 shots - 200 yards in bad mirage at Burro at far right, causing me to fling one high. OAL = 2.725. Some pressure signs as this is a max load. 2700 fps on the chrony

tikka200ydgroupphoto.jpg

800 - 900 and 1000 yard score card with same load, but lengthened to 2.835, no pressure signs, but lower velocity as the clicks did not match up to the data points for 2700...

Disclaimer, NRA 1000 yard standard slow fire prone target, but I used a stock Tikka Tactical 308 with a muzzle brake and a Nightforce BR scope 8 x 32 x 56 at 22 setting. Hence, I was out of class and should have been using a F class target, but I wasn't shooting for record as I had the muzzle brake.

TAC meters well and shoots well, it has anti fouling additives, and is not too temperature sensitive...yes, the herd loves Varget, but Varget meters like crap on a dillon

Re: TAC in 308...and TAC in 223

155SMK (2155) w/ 44.0gr TAC (FC Cases) = 2860fps from 26" barrel. Shoots consistenly submoa. I've shot about 3K of this combo. Meters like water.

175Berger OTM w/ 42.5gr TAC (FC Cases) = 2610fps from 22" barrel. Shoots very well, under 1/2moa.

Re: TAC in 308...and TAC in 223

I have been using TAC in my AR for a while. I have a DPMS with and 18" barrel with a 1/9 twist. My loads are 55 GR Montana Gold fmj 26.0 grs getting 3160 fps at 100 degrees, no pressure signs. 69gr Serria HPBT, think it is 25.0 grs getting 2900 fps and 24.0 grs with 75gr Hornady hpbt not A-MAX, 2750 fps at 100 degrees. Accuracy has been good with all loads inch or under at 100 yards if I do my part. I am a brass scrounge, so all cases are mixed head stamp, military etc.I do the works to it resize deprime, swedge primer pockets, trim with Dillon 1200. I do not uniform primer pockets or debur flash holes. Probally should sort some out and do that for the 69 and 75 grain loads and see what happens.
