Ok guys, I know that this is a subjective question and depends on your size, fitness, etc., however, I am curious as to what you think a maximum weight of a bolt gun for tactical comps should be?

I am 6' 2" and 190lbs with an athletic build and all my tac rifles are in AI stocks and surgeon actions which adds to the overall weight a little, but they range in weight (with mounts, optics, and bipod) from 15 to 20 lbs.

What do you'll think?

Thanks!

Re: Tactical comp rifle weight

There is no max or min, it's what you can shoot well with in multiple positions. My Surgeon sits in a Manners T5 and with a 27" barrel and USO it's 13.2 lbs. Add a sling and bipod and I'm right @ 15 lbs.

To me the criteria would be if you can shoot offhand for 10 rounds without getting the shakes. If it passes this test it's OK for tactical match rifle weight.A few lbs can make a huge difference. At almost 19lbs my rifle was too heavy for me.At 16.5lbs I can handle the rifle.1 more pound off would be perfect for me but I'd have to go for a lighter barrel profile.

The rig in my sig plus bi-pod comes in right at 14lbs. But there are optics that weight much more. I'm the same height as you with about 5-10lbs more weight and I have no problem with my rig.

Good luck,
Merritt

Re: Tactical comp rifle weight

max is whatever you can shoot/pack comfortably. That being said i try to keep mine 16lbs and under. My newest creation weighs in at exactly 14lbs including sako bidop, s&b 5-25, near rings/base.
