Absolute complete newbie when it comes to this

Thinking about picking one up for SHTF scenario, nothing crazy serious or duty use or anything

I see they range from a couple hundred to thousands

What would everyone recommend and prices somewhere in the middle?

Also I have a really big noggin so I'm guessing I'd need an XL?

Thanks in advance

If it comes to the point you need a brain bucket, you'll be better off with more ammo. Did any of you guys happen to see the recent study, where the old French WW I helmet faired better in overhead concussive blasts than the modern helmets?

You don’t need a ballistic helmet.

While they have lvl3 helmets (I have a Crye Airframe and never wear it) and lvl4 helmets exist, you don’t want plans A-Z including you getting shot in the head.

Helmets are for stopping fragmentation, displaced material during indirect fire, holding night vision and keeping you from bouncing your skull off stuff inside vehicles.

A polymer helmet will lighter, cheaper and will do the things you’ll need the most; NV platform and bump helmet.

For reference I wear a polymer OpsCore 99% of the time.

Same here. I only use my Ops Core to accommodate night vision. For SHTF as you mentioned, nightvision is an incredible advantage. So like other mentioned, dont worry about ballistic protection. Get a good setup for supporting nightvision.

Skull cap your nods. No need for a helmet man, even a bumper. The skull cap will fit in your bag/pouch/pocket better and will take up about as much room as your 14s.

Helmets, unless you’re climbing, boarding, or driving in certain vehicles aren’t needed.

But I’m not an Ig OpErAtOr so I’m sure many of them will say I’m wrong.

If you’re dead set on a helmet, just get a bump. Don’t waste your money on a ballistic one.
