Hi guys.
I have shot 50BMG @ 1000yds for a long time.
I shoot 0-200yds as a designated LEO marksman with .308
The "bit" in the middle is new to me. Shooting from a concrete bench with wind flags every 100yds with a 49lb rifle and 32X on the scope. Or shooting "aces" at 100yds isn't a issue. Figuring out a cold bore shot at a unknown distance is.
What gear am I going to need for a tactical match?
Tripods, bipods, backpacks, PDA I got covered for work.
What specialty gear do you guys use? GPS? weather stations? Cleaning kit?Or do you wait till the match is over? Any suggestions would be great. Your never too old to learn how to be a better shooter!

Re: Tactical match's

Don't worry about cleaning your rifle. Every 200 or 300 rounds is fine unless you're shooting a magnum.

Everything else depends. You may need a rangefinder IF shooting at unknown distances.

Really, just know your velocity for the rifle you intend to shoot and get some drop charts printed covering the ranges you'll be shooting. Go out and shoot a couple matches, ask questions and pay attention to what's going on around you. Most matches will have guys with all the gear and they'll be more than happy to show you their new toys.

Re: Tactical match's

Its the toys I'll need to practice with I'm interested in learning.
@ 1000 with a fifty you just watch the flags for a dope and know that at 10mph cross you get X amount of climb..Never had to figure it out on the "fly" so to speak..

Re: Tactical match's

Rifle: You seem to have that one down. Would recommend you have a DBM. Would recommend something in the 6.5/.260 family for lack of recoil and flat shooting round. .308 will work though.
Scope: Would recommend a FFP (pick your flavor)
Bipod: Would have to go with Atlas
Sling: TAB or TIS
Mags: 3-4 mags for the DMB
From there it becomes more specific to the comp. A LRF (swaro works great) can be of great use, Binos (Vortex makes some great ones), etc.

All this comes with the old adage that ounces become pounds and pounds become pain (I need to take my own advice).

Re: Tactical match's

rifle, bipod, scope, sling, I got covered. I have a Nikon LRF but it only goes to 800. (way more than I needed up till now).
The BDM I am working on.
5 or 10 round mags?

Depends on the comp. I run 10 so I have flexibility.

Re: Tactical match's

I myself am just getting ready to go to JimThePlumber's match 3-27 and actually built a bit of a "Tactical Match" rifle. I am calling it that because that is my intended use for it, not ELR but for anything under 1200 or 1300 yards....probably less but we shall see!

Rifle:
Rem M700 7mm-08 Varminter chopped to 18" and Badger Thruster brake w/ cap for "no brake"
McMillan A1-3 flush cups on left side
Badger M5 1)5rd 2)10rd
DD Ross Knob
Super Sniper 3-9 FFP
TIS sling and cuff
IOR 30MOA base
162gr Amax hoping to get 2500fps
Eagle stock pack

Should be a great runner for "matches"

Gear:
Camelback Delta 5 Vest (comes with hydration bladder)
Gas mask pouch for Newcon LRB's and other large items
Triad 2-10rd AI mag pouch
2)Frag grenade pouches for GPS, Phone
Seal SOG knife and Leatherman
Pouch that holds 10 extra extra rounds
2)pistol mag pouches
And a oldschool leather belt with a pistol on it.

The vest works really well prone instead of a rear bag, I can grab the strong side of the vest with my weak hand and tighten my grip just like a rear bag. And if I don't like somthing where it is I can move it easily.

Camo's don't match and not the most expensive shit or prettiest but it seems to be working ok just normal shooting.....I will probably alter it moreso after my first match. You should check the restrictions of the match you are looking to shoot...might alter what gear you endup getting....lots of Tactical matches have "no rear bag" or "attatched to the rifle only" rules.

Re: Tactical match's

Disregard all the above "drivel". All you really need to succeed at Tactical Matches is a supreme quality shooting mat:

the Dead Hooker Blanket... preferably stained, for maximum comfort.

Re: Tactical match's

Lets say your gonna complete at Rifles Only!
Rifle .223-.338 with a DBM, 4 mags, 3-10s and a 5 rounder
Pistol 9mm and up, 3 mags
Holester, NOT FOBUS!, you need something with retention
Pistol mag pouch on a belt with a dump pouch
Sling, I perfer a TAB over my TIS and 1907
Bipod, Harris 6-9 swivel with notched legs and PodLock
Rear Bag, Get a TAB
MilDot Master
Dope of some sort, may I suggest DTAC cards
Kestrel 4000
CamelBack MULE as your backpack works wonderfully, there small and will keep you from carrying too much shit

The highlighted bits are a bit worrisome for me.

Those should have been covered in your Basic Sniper course. If you are in a position as a DM and you have not been to a professional school that teaches you the "bit in the middle" then you need to get there.

Once you have been professionally instructed and practiced, winning matches is just a matter of polishing the fine points better than the next guy.

Gear is not an issue, GEARS between the EARS are. I shoot most matches with my duty gear. I am just now getting to the point where I am thinking about building a dedicated match rifle in a caliber that better cheats the wind. All the rest of my gear is the same stuff I use on callouts.

Re: Tactical match's

Most LE sniper schools Don't instruct past 200 yards. There is a lot to cover in the minimum amount of time. Suprisingly, an agency will only allow most students to attend a one or two week school. The rest of the training will come from older members or the students own desire to absorb as much info as he can find. (like here on the hide!). The other issue is most students and shooters can't find a place to reach out beyond 300. especially in urban areas we are stuck with 100 yards.
Bullet Sponge, I use a leica lrf 1200 and a I-Touch with Bullet Flight with great results for a 300 wm and Gap 308. Stay with it, long distance shooting is an obsession.

Lonewolf
My training as DM was the captain new I was a gun nut, and shot 50bmg which I guess was good enough for him. I went to play with the State police SWAT for 2 days. (nothing over 200yds). For the first 6 months I was carrying my own Ruger with a Redfield 3x9 in .243 till we could ring the budget out enough for a rifles. We have one DM per shift and since I went for "SWAT" training I had to teach our other 2 DM's what I knew..
I hope your Dept and budget is bigger than ours.

Re: Tactical match's

You won't have time to laz your targets, and at RO there not allowed, most of the time the distance is known, or can be judged very easilly, when you do have to range the size of the target will be told, hence the MolDot Master. It's important to use a small pack, the big packs mind fuck you in to carrying to much useless stuff.
