I am seeking your opinions about stock selection for a 300WM tactical rifle (Remington LA). I currently have a 308 (Remington SA) in a McMillian HTG stock with an adjustable comb. I like the relative sleekness of the stock because lends itself to assorted firing positions easily. My rifle weights about 15 lbs (26 inch heavy barrel, sniper fill, etc.). I see that most tactical 300WM's utilize McMillan A-2 thru through the A-5 contours which in my opinion lend themselves to utilized mostly in the prone position . I rarely see one with the HTG stock. Could this be because of the increased recoil? What do you all think about a 300WM in the HTG, HTG with adjustable Comb or even the A1-3?
Thanks go ahead and fire away.

1+ Absolutely love my FTE brake

I think my next build will be a 300 wm in a HTG with a FTE. Here is one in a A3 that I just finished and waiting on temporary scope!!

Re: Tactical Stock for 300WM

Dagger,
I own a KMW 300WM with a A5 stock, the weight, and contours definitely lend themselves to long sessions in the prone, but I have done a good bit of shooting from the sitting over a pack, and a little standing just to see if it can be done. I think it worked pretty well from both positions but standing is awkward to say the least. I have also shot ALOT of offhand with the HTG style and I think it is by far superior for offhand and improvised positions. Pretty much any custom 300 is going to weigh enough to tame a lot of the recoil, so to me, what would matter more is simply the intended employment of the rifle, Most of the larger magnum rifles you see are intended for long range shooting with little groups in mind, as opposed to stalking and shooting from every improvised position imaginable, hence the tactical bench rest style stocks.
The only thing I would watch out for in the HTG and other stocks with adjustable comb's is the long action issue of not being able to remove the bolt because of the raised check piece, it is a pain having to lower it and try and put it back up in the exact spot after cleanings.
thats my .02 cents

Re: Tactical Stock for 300WM

There is nothing wrong with a HTG stock. It's a great stock. I'd leave it the way it is. I love the rear of the HTG being easier for me to use in multi positions. I have two HTGs and my new 300WM is being built into a Manners T3 which has the rear portion like the HTG with a slightly higher comb but the forend is like an A5. I think it's a great stock as well.

Re: Tactical Stock for 300WM

I have a HS PSS stock on my 30-06 right now. I'm debating whether I want to have Randy inlet it for my Badger M5 or just buy an A1-3 (or Manners T3) already inletted.

I'd really like an after market stock but there's nothing wrong with this one so in interest of saving money I may roll with what I've got.

Re: Tactical Stock for 300WM

Hell, you are already there. I also use the HTG adj and if I don't go with the Manners T3 like Rob suggested, I will buy another HTG for my 30-06 I'm getting ready to spend some $$ on. I haven't run into the problem removing the bolt, but my 30-06 LA is in a B&C medalist right now so I wouldn't.

It wouldn't even be a question if Manners did a molded in color. I try to be very careful with my rifles, but I seem to bump into stuff from time to time and the molded in colors are ME proof.

I don't doubt that you have seen the price that JWPrecision sells the HTG adj for.
