I was able to get my hands on one of the limited Boyds tacticool stocks, the rifle is going to be a complete build by me. This is a project rifle for my first/only born. Money is tight so that's the only reason I'm doing this myself, but I look at it as a good learning experience. I'm going to walk you through the steps I'm taking in case one of you guys want to attempt it and you can use it to guide you along the process.

first thing I did was to wipe the stock completely.

Second I got painters tape and masked what needed to be done.

third, I got a hobby knife and rounded the edges of the tape for a better look

forth step(poor mans texture mix) JB weld, mix the steel and the hardener and I used a old credit card to apply. Once applied I tapped the Jb weld for the texture look and with the same card removed the extra weld to remove the run down look.

I also did my deodorant before I did the stock

now I'm waiting for it to dry, if you have to tap it some more. Do it before it gets to hard and if the texture is to rough, you can just sand it for the more comfortable feel

Re: Tacticool stock project

Have you tried fitting the action and barrel yet? Just got mine and the fit was terrible,at least it is oversize and not under.I had to open up the barrel channel, sand down about 1/8" at the back of the receiver and bottom metal/trigger area and clean it up with a dremel inside. Finally ready to paint over that Mint Green.

I don't have a barreled action yet, I'm just going to take it slow on this one.

Re: Tacticool stock project

just took the tape off, I need to let it dry completely. Then I also need to get some gap stencils. I've never painted before so we'll see how it turns out

At least the areas you textured won't require any fitting.Been thinking of doing the same to mine.Doing my barrel and action in coyote tan and camo on the stock.

Re: Tacticool stock project

it looks like yours did the same as the devcon i used. it was in two 1oz tubes like a small JB Weld package. i never was able to get sharp peaks out of it so i didnt use it. im going to retape it and try again or just send it to someone who has "real" devcon as i just could not get the sharpness i was after. i did get a sample can of stuff with a mixed in media i may try also. looks good man, uhm, why didnt you put it in the rimfire section?

Krylon is your friend. Screw the fusion stuff and go with the Camo series. You get way more colors to play with and if you want to remove it later, graffitti remover works good. Remember to mask it well, and if you are using a different color, spray same color forst at the seal so you have a good line. If you don't mind a little 'edge', tape it and run with it.
When you are using stensils, keep a brush in a container of paint remover handy with a few paint remover damp rags to clean your stencil from coat to coat so it doesn't build up if it's not a 'decal'

Re: Tacticool stock project

There is another way to ad texture that is easier to duplicate and much more consistent . Feel free to PM me if your interested .

Here is a project rifle we built using the technique .

Could you mix in some sand?

Re: Tacticool stock project

Use ACRAGLASS.... I think is its name... from Brownells..

Once its on use a pop sickle stick... to slap it with giving it the texture..

BE CAREFULL... as it will make VERY sharp points that will need to be filed down.

Matt.

Would you guys be interested in something like this ? I can also get it in Gray , Rust and a bright green . basically the same stuff thats on roofing shingles . I can also get some coarser stuff in a few of the colors .

Let me know and I can get some pictures of the other colors and what it will cost .

Re: Tacticool stock project

Depending on what color your painting it the color of the grit can be important . If you want to use the grit as an accent color you can just clear it and it looks pretty cool .

Re: Tacticool stock project

I use Marinetex with good results.
I had some of the problem that you encountered with the sharp peaks.

What I worked out was that I was applying too thick of a layer. When I went to just the thinnest of coats [about the tape thickness] it 'patted out' to a good texture without the real sharp peaks. Timing is also critical to let it set up to a point where it doesn't want to lay back down.

There was a thread here in the Gunsmithing forum lately with some good technique and pics.
