Have 2, 300wm's one heavy one lite. The lite one all of a sudden became a shotgun, looked at everything changed a few things. Took it out and the first 3 shots at 600 were a max of 3" apart (1/2moa) (jhuskey witness) being pinwheels, with two one on top of each other, the 4 an 5th shots were 2-3 moa away, from the first 3. The barrel is being changed and receiver being trued in it should be home next week. Went to Hardrock to shoot yesterday, took the heavy stick. Very first shot was 3 moa low at 600 but I pressed forward any way. At a grand it took 30 moa to get there, so I'm like WTF is going on here. Riding home thinking, at 0130 this am woke up and knew what all the issues were from, me the asshole who never gets his shit mixed up. I had been shooting the heavy guns load in the lite gun and took a lighter load ( my short range playing load) to the match. Talk about being a dumb ass! Lesson learned stay on top of your shit an always double check what goes with what. The little brain-fart will cost me about a grand before it's over, costly lesson. Still does not answer the reason I placed so poorly with the .308 though, must have been the shooter.

Good on you for owning it and posting up your experience. 2ndamendfan and I just had a discussion last night about being aware of what we're doing. We were talking about inadvertently putting a 300 BO round in a 5.56 upper and the results.

I'll bet you were tearing yourself apart trying to figure out just what in the hell was going on. I know I would have. Great learning reminder that you'll not forget soon, and the bonus is you didn't break anything and you're in one piece. Again, good for you for sharing. Helps keep us sharp.

Yes I have been a dumbass before one time I was shooting my 40 and my 45 at the same time and I accidentlay shot 40S&W in my 45ACP. Lucky the only thing hurt was my echo. I will not shoot my 6.5CM and 308 at the same time for this reason......better safe than sorry.

I did the same bloody thing a couple of months ago...never will put both guns with cartridges on the table again

I know a P226 9mm will successfully consume 380 ACP... unintentionally of course.

Other than accidentally charging 338LM with Varget once (I noticed the grain size difference after about 10 charges, luckily before seating) I haven't had too many crazy moments. The occasional no-charge from progressive loading.

A cut-away of a barrel having this happened:

Good Lord. Waste of a damn nice barrel. Any back story as to the rest of the rifle? Thank baby jesus you can't run more than one pop if and when this happens. I am so marking a few mags and keeping 300BO on the opposite side of the room. Seriously.

That right there is the reason I never went 300BO. Wonder what the bc would be on a bullet that long. :p

Done That .. At 600 yard shoot . was shoving .308 slow 2580 Vel. 175's into my rifle that was chamber reamed and set-up for 155 vld's @ 2925 fps . Scratching head why WTF it was not even hitting the board, until it dawned on me .
.

I was doing load work up for a friends 260 I was in the prone with my 308 beside me, plan was to shoot a group out of the 260 let it cool off and shoot one with the 308. I had gone through the first round of 260 then 308 and my 7 year old was getting bored so I thought one more group out of the 308 and I will go home, a 260 will shoot out of a 308 just not very accurately lesson learned

Yep, have to KNOW and understand that the issue exists. Don't have both guns and both ammo out at the same time. In general i think we would all agree firearms require your undivided attention.

As for my brain fart. When i first got my progressive (after almost 5000 rds on a single stage). I ended up with a few with no powder. Primer will send a 45acp 230grain about 2 inches down a barrel.
I knew something was wrong instantly. Let me teach my wife and daughter if the gun ever sounds different or does something different figure out WHY before pulling the trigger again.
tore the 100 rds down and had 7 without powder. Learned a valuable lesson.

Yeah really! Unfortunately no back story. I remember seeing that image many years ago here on the forums when 300BLK became popular and this had happened.

Do anything often enough and long enough and something will go wrong. With firearms and vehicles the results can be significant. Gunfighter thanks for putting this up. It's a worthy reminder. AJ, thanks to you also. During load development for a .243 I was using a box which had been dedicated to .308. I looked at the open box yesterday and noted there were 15 .243 empties at one end and ten .308 empties, with five loaded rounds at the other end. The box was clearly marked but still not a good idea and worse I didn't correct it then

Fixed it, thanks.

I have two identical long action rifles. One is a 300 Win Mag, the other a 243 (long action for longer 243 bullets). They now have different scopes. A 243 WILL chamber and fire out of a 300 Win mag. The case splits, and the bullet flies all to hell-ask me how I know.

Had a similar incident back in December. It was cold and couldn't feel my hands while loading the magazine and somehow a 10mm round was in with my 45 ammo. Shot the pistol and it would extract the round so I got messing with it when I realized what happened. My buddy was laughing his ass off at me. I don't know how it got in there with the other ammo and pretty sure I would have noticed if my hands weren't numb but it shows you what can happen of you are complacent.

My kid did it to me once. Wasn't watching him, and Mr. "I know what I'm doing" stuck a 5.45x39 into a 7.62x39 magazine. It absolutely smoked the very tip of the corner of the uppermost right leading edge of the hammer, sliced it off and left a tiny replica of a pyramid behind somewhere. He hasn't been shooting with me since. I guess Dad was louder than the rifle.

Props to you for that expensive as fuck 1911 not being a safe queen, even if you turned that bastard into a paperweight.

I've loaded a 190smk or 208 amax into a 7rem mag case with my 300win mag charge and fired it through a win mag. Accuracy was shit and when I looked at the case I thought WTF, where did the neck go...

I've loaded 140 gr 7rem mag with 130 gr data. Figured that one out prior to firing.

I've loaded several 380 cases when loading 9x19. One being a berdan primed case that the sizer punched a third hole into. I should probably stop reloading. LOL.
