I'm new to long range and wanting to have another barrel put on my remington 700 in 270wsm. A few of the guys I shoot with shoot Savage custom actions with the screw on barrels with barrel nuts. They were telling me of a few companies selling what they call rem-age barrels which are drop-in barrels that use a barrel nut too and that they could do all the barrel work if I went that route. Has anyone ever done this without truing up the action? The gun shoots consistant .75 moa or better when I do my part, so I was hoping this was an easy way to put a heavier barrel on my remmy that would at least let it keep the same accuracy if not improve it. I'm happy with the accuracy but just want a varmint contour barrel to be able to shoot more between cooling. So tell me all the pro's and con's of doing this please. Thanks in advance.

bj, it works well. Every bit as well as a Sav. We usta cut the Rem bolts off and install Sav bolt heads in them.

If I did it today I'd chamber one up with the .150 recess and give it an extra .010 clearance for the bolt nose. PacNor made the barrel nut for $50 if I remember correctly. It fit a Salvage barrel nut wrench nicely.
It was a pain in the ass compared to a normally shanked barrel but we didnt know that then.
