I've used an m die for years on a progressive. Works ok. Wondering if an expander mandrel wouod work better? Anyone running something other than an m die with a bulletfeeder?

for rifle brass I use a carbide expander mandrel on progressive.

It been a minute since I've reloaded pistol brass but from what I remember, its more of a bell for a small portion of the neck rather than expanding the entire length of the neck - like we do for rifle brass. I suppose you could set your expander mandrel shallow but not sure that would necessarily be better, because its more of a bell shape. I could be wrong about the expansion on pistol brass and I might not understand your question.

When loading pistol on the 650 I use these double alpha powder funnels . Works like a m-die.

Question was specific to rifle. Pistol can have the expander in the powder drop or m die. But pistol setup works just fine. I can get them by to work on rifle but it doesn't seem to be Optimum results. I guess my question is more, if you are using a mandrel, is it able to produce sufficient tension and hold the bullet during the movement of the shell plate.

I Mainly use the 650 when I’m loading for quantity. I tried the mandrel idea out earlier this summer. Loaded these rounds on a MEC marksman. For me there was no gain in Concentricity or group size to 600 yards. The mandrel was just adding a extra step. I used 21st century mandrels with gen x body for testing. No improvement over my forester with floating button. Your mileage may vary, but I would do a before and after comparison. You might be surprised.
