I googled the hell out of this ammo and cannot find what it is or what grain it is. I dont want to say where I got it and all I was told it was .300WM AP-HE Factory Ammunition.

Im wondering if anyone has seen this before. This is the first I ever seen .300WM AP ammo before. I know normally black tips mean AP.

<span style="font-weight: bold">What is the name for this ammo MK??? Mod? or M???
What grain is the bullet?
Is it a true AP-HE Round?
Safe to shoot?</span>

OAL was 3.300". Seemed kinda short to me. Or no? Or maybe im just used to loading my 208gr. A-MAXs @ 3.590"

<span style="font-weight: bold">These all stuck to a magnet</span> also to test. <span style="text-decoration: underline">Magnet sticky = Steel Core = AP Bullet</span>.

<span style="text-decoration: underline">Pics below. All brass is FC Stamped.</span>

best I could find. if you look in the question quick links there is a bullet tip color section. </div></div>

Ok, well it says being a black tip = M61

Helps outs a little thanks.

Its kinda odd cuz I never seen a AP round with a Black AND yellow tip, then a again I never seen .300WM AP-HE ammo before either.

Im sure ill get a good answer from somebody here on the Hide. Somebody has got to know what they are!

Im sure somebody is going to say "Pull one and you will find out what it is by looking at the full bullet." I dont want to pull one of 'em cuz I dont have many of them.

Re: Tell me what kind of ammo this is! (if you can!)

No Military 300wm round I know of is colored like that, nor are they issued w/o a date. They look like someone just painted them to me. Pull a bullet and show us the base, I'd like to see if it has a base fuse or a base cap where a insert was placed. If neither and it's none magnetic it would be safe to cut open, "IF YOU KNOW HOW TO DO IT SAFELY" if not don't do it. Just shoot it at a 1/2" mild steel plate at 200yds and report back.

All Military I know/knew of is 100% dipped, so if you were to scrap the very tip color you would also find the other colors as well from the different dips.

I have been known to paint Military ammo tips with all kinds of colors and leave them lay, just for chuckles. I never knew 5.56X45 came in APIT but I've had guys tell me the bait was such. Also found out 7.62X51 Duplex came in API. This is why I love public ranges so much, the education factor is first rate.

PICS ADDDED ON ORIGINAL POST>bump

I have some 1/2" and 3/4" steel plate to test them on also.

They did stick to a magnet so I do not want to cut any of the pulled bullets open.

Im guessing somebody took 30-06 AP Bullets and loaded them for a .300WM and painted the tips.??? IMO

Re: Tell me what kind of ammo this is! (if you can!)

They have an insert, and if magnetic they most likely came from 7.62x51 ammo as the old 30-06 AP bullet weighed 163gr's IIRC. I can't see the base that well but it looks like there's no base fuse, so most likely no tracer. Light Blue and gray were used a lot to denote incendiary.

How far from the tip is the middle of the crimp band?

Tell us how the plate test goes.

There is a remote chance there could be a charge in them, as the Russian's had a very good 7.62X54R rd that was explosive and many 100K's of those round made it into this country. If that's what they are, they are nothing to play with. Those will mic at .310-.312 w/.311 the norm. I've tested a few first hand and can tell ya the Russian's knew what they were doing back then.

Could be something Uncle had hastily made via a need in A-Stand.

Keep us posted

Re: Tell me what kind of ammo this is! (if you can!)

I have some silver tip(API) that was loaded in 300WM in 10 rd blister packs. Military 300WM has been around in odd configurations for some time now. This strikes me as ruski bullets. I have some X39 BZ API that is red/black. Black is universally AP and yellow in 54R usually means heavy ball. Maybe it's ruski "heavy AP"?

Re: Tell me what kind of ammo this is! PICS ADDED

All the .300 WM military ammo I have seen had only a date stamp on the case head. All I have seen have only the date and who made it. Most I have seen were from the late 60's to mid 70's. Memory may be faulty on the date's but we measured the case to determine it was 300 win. First belted military case I had ever seen.

What kind of brass do they use for the military Mk248 loads??

Also the 83.6gr. Charge for a 150-160gr. bullet seems kinda hot to me unless its Retumbo (it kinda looks like it).

I cant wait to try these on the 1/2" and 3/4" steel plates I have and it will show the true nature of the bullet.

Re: Tell me what kind of ammo this is! PICS ADDED

The linked resource should walk you through all military ammunition color coding, to include the Soviet designed stuff. I use this to ID unknown ammunition at work, and have found it reasonably comprehensive.

http://www.conjay.com/Ammunition%20for%20Armor%20Testing%20East%207.62mm%20x%2054R.htm

Bottom line: I don't see anything like it listed, and based on the commercial head-stamp, it appears the projectile is a reload. No Eastern Bloc countries color the 7.62x54R yellow/black, although it looks like Hungary likes the yellow/silver for some reason.

Take a look at the other rounds in the link. It should walk you through all the standard color coding for military ammo.

Re: Tell me what kind of ammo this is! PICS ADDED

<span style="font-weight: bold">I had recently pulled these bullets and loaded them up with 80.0gr. of H-1000, Fed 215 Primer, Resized the Brass and chamfer/deburred/uniformed primer pockets. (The original 84.0gr of powder charge it had made me a little nervous.) Since the only 84.0gr. charge I could find in books was a MAX load of H-1000 in the Speer book (I dont know what powder was used in original load. I loaded the minimum 80.0gr. to be safe since these are only for testing and not for accuracy.)

The average bullet wieght was 156.0gr.

I noticed the original primers were not even seated correctly not deep enough, the rounds would tip over if standed straight up becuase of primer protruding.

Also the 3.300" original OAL. I seated them @ .030" above the cannalure at 3.460" (chamber fine). I also removed the paint on the tips.

These were definetly reloads, to my inspection.
I feel safer shooting them since I know Re-Re loaded them!</span>Will test them on 1/2" and 3/4" steel plate and report back results.

What kind of paint do you use to do that? I have always wondered because all the M855 and M856 I burned in the USMC the paint looked very thin.

Exactly. The green paint on all the M855 I shot was so thin that it would flake off if you looked at it wrong.

Military bullet painting to denote type, is very thin and very weak. If it looks like its in "brand new condition" and its at a gunshow... That guy was busy with some Testors model paint the night before.

I used the wife's craft brush an paint, which I think is water based. I've used Krylon, Latex, anything I can find.

The best response I have to date was a 67 TW 7.62X51 round I painted. I don't recall all 3 colors I used but one was blaze orange, the Spurt's called it, special training ammo. Per them, it was only used for over head fire on the infiltration course at night. If it were to hit anything/body no harm would be done. Really I ask, and they were 200% in agreement they had the correct answer.
All you have to do is cast the right bait, and painting military ammo tips has always be a great starting point,... from my boat.
