I am wondering what everyone's opinion is on the powders that are the least temperature sensitive. Reason I ask as spring is coming and here in MI as some other states there will be three to four seasons per month until about the end of May. Looking to buy alot of powder to last the year (or more). Would be helpful if one could cover all three rifles (30-06, 223, 308). Mainly looking for the 223 & 308 as that is the wife's and my rifles, the '06' is my brother's that I reload for.

Re: Temp sensitivity

All weather power for 223 and 308, varget

imr 8208 xbr is to new to know yet but hodgdon says it to should be good.

You can use varget in the 30-06, but h4831 or h4350 may be better there. I have not loaded a 30-06 in a very long time so someone else will have to help you there.

Re: Temp sensitivity

I bleed '335 in 223/223AI with everything from 32'-75's.

The 62 at 3400fps,the 75 at 3150fps in a 1-8" 21" 223AI,for conversation.

Here is a quote from the article in the link below:

"IMR 8208 XBR is Consistent in All Conditions
This short grain extruded rifle powder exhibits exceptional stability with virtually no change in velocity at temperatures ranging from -40 degrees F to 165+ degrees F."

Re: Temp sensitivity

H4350 would be a really good choice for the '06 and I have used it extensively with bullets up to 190 gr with no temperature issues ranging from 10-90 degrees. Varget would be OK for lighter bullets in the '06 but in my experience I've found that the velocities would be right about the same as in the 308. Varget would be better left to the 08.

H335 Is Temperature sensitive.
150fps Swing is around the norm.
Have read that Hot temperatures and heavy bullets do not work well with H335. YMMV

but if you only shoot on Sunny 70 degree days and with no wind then its not temperature sensitive.

Re: Temp sensitivity

Good to know 4rail. MI is a strange place in spring/fall. My Robinson XCR is only eating 62's, mainly with W728, and the wife's Mini SASS is getting fed 75 bthp Hornady's with Varget and R15. Just starting to do some tests for hers.
