So I've been hearing that WOA SPR barrels arent in true SPR specs and that a common problem found by guys after they get their OPS 12 models is they are gettin only around 2 rotations of thread contact with the brake. So since I have a OPS 12 model sittin in the GAP vault awaiting my 18 year paperwork ordeal I figured I'd take my WOA barreled MK12 MOD-0 into the shop and have a look see with the actual can.

Well George and I put the can on and it in fact only got 2 rotations of threads before being stopped by the collar. In short the .750 step on the barrel was almost a 1/4 inch too long. So George hollers at Flounder and asks if he has the time to turn it down a bit and He says "sure no problem". Flounder is a true wizard at what he does and was awsome to watch, he had it stripped to the barrel in 2.5 seconds and was cuttin it within 5 mins.

He backed the step up that .25 inch and then put the collar back on and discovered that because of backing the step off where it should be the collar was butting against the gas block, so another couple wizardry type moments later and he took a few thousandths off the backside of the collar to where there is a small gap between the collar and gas block. 35 seconds later the gun was back together. mounted the can and counted the rotations, the can has 11 threads and it came to 11 rotations, 100% thread contact!

the point of this thread is 2 fold, firstly and most impotantly is to thank George and Flounder, Everyone there at GAP are true professionals and gentlemen. Flounder is a machining ARTIST and cant thank them enough.

and secondly, if you are building a SPR and plan on using an OPS 12th model be aware of the specific contour needed(talk to Ron at Ops Inc first), food for thought

I'm done humming on the GAP balls but they are just so good.....thanks George and Flounder!

Re: Thanks Flounder and George

I only hope to get out of the dust long enough to make a trip there someday.

ETA: Deleted WOA comment with new info below about their barrels.

Re: Thanks Flounder and George

Well I am disappointed again in that there are not any pictures of the following while you were there:

1. Your said rifle, with and without the mods that flounder produced.

2. You on your knees licking George and Flounders balls!!

WTF? I need pictures and the SPR alone is good picture taking material.

UPDATE! UPDATE!

after talking to WOA and Ron at OPs Inc the deal is this- The WOA barrels are exact clones of a Mil Douglas barrel, specs of which have never been released, just copied. Using that spec you get between 3-4 threads of engagement, the Military's requirement is 3. Now with only 3 threads contact they have never had any reports of failure but Ron says thats silly, the threads are there and should be used and they (OPs Inc) recommends 6-8 threads.

So, My barrel now might be having a few exposed threads in the can which could cause issues getting the can off after firing. The can has 10 threads inside it. I faxed Ron a drawing of the current specs on mine and he's gonna make a custom collar for it.

Morale of the story is I shoulda called Ops Inc before having anything done to the barrel. OH and I forgot a key part of the story, OPs Inc has 2 different collars, a short one and a longer one, the issues I had was cause I had the shorter one and the longer probably woulda worked fine. I can imagine other guys could and will run into this situation if they are not aware of the two different collar dimensions.

Im thinking of just deleating this thread cause it really wasnt a WOA barrel problem, and GAP was just doing what I asked, the fault lies with me not doing enough research beforehand, leason learned. Regardless George's crew is top notch
