Ok, so today a buddy asked if he could come by and let his bolt take a dip in our park tank. He went through the normal penny in the notch drill, and all was going fine until he got to removing the crosspin out of the cocking piece. He was trying to press the bolt shroud down by hand and get the hubby to knock it out. When Jim quit laughing he showed him his trick.

Whats needed? 1 Bic pen. Yup. That's it.

He cut a 3/4" piece off the end of the pen leaving a short hollow tube. (sorry about the crappy pics)

Slide the tube over the end of the pin.

Screw it back into the bolt and it'll push the cocking piece right back out and give you easy access to the cross pin.

Works for long action bolts too...

Hope this helps those of you who don't have or wont spend $30 on the Sinclair tool.

The only issue with a 9mm case is the tip of the FP is stressed and ground into the bottom of the case. Maybe if you cut the case head off. But with plastic, there is no marring, no stress, and with only 3/4" needed, the pen still works! The same little piece of Bic pen has been in the tool box for years, and I doubt its going anywhere or will ever be replaced unless I lose it.

Great tip Kenda. I've been using a 3/4" piece of aluminum arrow shaft. Even though Al is a soft metal, I kinda like the idea of plastic being sandwiched between the fp and bolt body a little better.

Re: The $0.02 Remington bolt tool

Made my little tube thingy out of titanium tubing quite a while ago...works great.

Instead of a penny or dime which can pop out at the most inopportune time, I make these little dohickys out of plain old 3/8" round washers. Just find one that fits your bolt slot, or sand one down to fit it, and then carve this shape out with a dremel, or a bridgeport, which ever suits you.

Pretty self explanatory, but it slips down from the top with the long side in the slot, and can't be knocked loose or pop out because it's "kept" there with the other side. Tolerance is just enough to let it slip in place and no looser.
