Hi Guys,

Hope im not digging the grave and posting something much talked about, or posting in the wrong section.

I figure this question relates more to handloaders than it does to just AICS owners using factory loads.

I have recently purchase a box of Berger hunting VLD's in 185gr for my 1:12" remington 700P.

After doing a bit of reading up on this projectile I have discovered that one should begin testing OAL with the following distances jumping these VLD projectiles from the lands 0.010, 0.050, 0.09 and 0.130. Ok easy enough, however I have just measured OAL for this projectile in my rifle and it seems that the ogive meets the lands with an overall cartridge length of about 2.95" or somewhere there abouts. I havnt got my caliper handy to give a precise amount but this is what im getting with a few rulers.

I was excited about purchasing these rounds as im looking for a decent one shot system for paper punching and hunting... Now im not so sure because the only way il be able to fit these rounds into my AICS mags is if they like to shoot well with a decent jump of .130 which puts me right on the edge AICS .308 magazine max internal length.

So i guess the question I would like to ask is, for those of you with AICS .308 rifles, what are your favorite handload projectiles that fit into your AICS magazines and for what purpose do you use these projectiles.

***These loads are safe IN MY RIFLE. Work up all loads from a lower charge weight and watch for signs of pressure. *********

Rem 700 SPS-V 1:12 twist.
CDI DBM w/ AICS Mags

Hornady 155 AMAX (tip just short of front plate)
Win Brass
47.2gr Varget
Wolf LR primer
avg 2930fps
I use these for Target and would use for Hunting up to Deer/Hogs. I only use this rifle for targets at the moment.

Lapua 155 Scenars 47.4gr Varget. Target only

Nosler 155 CC 47.2gr Varget - Target only

Re: The .308win and AICS mags... Favorite Loads

Ive currently worked up an Amax 155 load for my rifle, i know they will fit in the AICS mags.

Do your scenars shoot nicely within the allowed COAL? I hear they are fantastic target rounds and would love to be able to mag load them and use them on varmints at long range.

Nosler 155's are they the green balistic tips?

Re: The .308win and AICS mags... Favorite Loads

Yes. The Scenars shoot well and don't seem to be sensitive to seating depth. I have a factory Remington barrel. I'm guessing the lead/throat is the standard long throat. Every projo I listed is seated to just short of the front spacer plate in the AICS mags and I've never messed with anything beyond that.

The Noslers are custom competition - BTHP no tips with J4 jackets.

I originally worked up to 47.8 grains of Varget for the 155 AMAX, Scenar and Nosler CC's and decided to back down to 47.4 for further tuning. With 47.4gr at 100 & 200 yds consistent 5 shot groups all below .75@100yds and sub-MOA @ 200yds. I felt like I could reduce the charge by a few tenths of a grain and fine tune more as I worked on my form. Now with 47.2gr and the AMAX I shot (10) 5 shot strings @ 100 the largest group being .489 (I pushed a few shots) and the smallest being .245. These groups were shot prone with a bipod and rear bag.

I need to fine tune the Scenars next and re-chrony. Unfortunately I just ran out of my current keg & lot of Varget, so I need to drop the charge weight down and work up with my new lot/keg to ensure I'm still @ safe pressures with 47.2gr.

Here ya go flyboy

AICS Mags 2.880 OAL

Please keep in mind, AICS mags are different from AE and AW mags, and they arent interchangable in the AICS for the Remington 700.

Re: The .308win and AICS mags... Favorite Loads

Vman,

There was a lot that had issues several years back. I doubt there will be much, if any, inconsistency in the new lot. I just do it to be safe.

Re: The .308win and AICS mags... Favorite Loads

Good stuff here. I'm working up a load for my new GAP in .308 and measured the AICS mags to be about 2.880 as well.

My most recent test loads are seated just to fit in the mag and show no signs of overpressure.

I'm using 44.0 grains of Varget
Berger 175 HPBT Match
Lapua brass
My chrono show 2700 fps

Re: The .308win and AICS mags... Favorite Loads

Hows the accuracy of that load sheckie?

If i use my berger 185's with my AICS mags the closest i can get to the lands, when loaded to mag length, is about 0.09 jump from the lands.

I have yet to actually test mag loaded bergers, fingers crossed they shoot well.

Do you know what the overall projectile size is for the Berger 175's ? Maybe i should purchase a box of those for load development

Re: The .308win and AICS mags... Favorite Loads

I haven't tested loads that have a COAL beyond 2.810", my current load is averaging 1/2 MOA @100yds and beyond. It is: 168gr SMK, 43.5grs IMR4895, CCIBR2 primers, Win or Rem brass neck sized and trimmed to 2.010", COAL 2.810". I started running them through a neck concentricity gauge and correcting bullet run out, but haven't noticed a difference in results yet. But I plan on using this for targets out to 600yds. I have a .223 bolt gun that I use for varmints but until I hunt groundhogs beyond 300yds, I'll only be using this rifle for smacking paper and steel.

Sorry VMAN, got caught up with the BS work shit,

The accuracy is decent for above load but I settled on 2.875 OAL using both Lapua brass and some old Remington Arms (RA) military brass that I acquired some time ago.

I settled on 44.2 grains of Varget and 2.875 OAL.

The RA brass held pretty consistent at 2740 FPS. The best 5 shot group so far at 100 yards measured just under 1/4".

The overall projectile size in 1.277".
