Re: The $500 Rally Car That Took Third Place

when i saw the pic in this thread, something didnt add up, 3rd place against c4's? before i clicked the link i had it figured for rally mexico (only place he could have entered and gone up against a citroen c4 on north/central america) so yea.. 3rd in class makes sense, thats a great deal though.. in barbados we are big on rallying (rally capital of the caribbean) and a half day 2 stage event still usually has over 4 wrc cars (figure $300,000 a piece) and at least 20 other entrys. our big rally is in may, and has a 90 car limit, 2 days of fun, $1000 drinks bill, $500 food bill, and we camp out during the night at different stages, with a bigass bbq going by sunrise

Re: The $500 Rally Car That Took Third Place

We used to race SCCA SOLO events in a clapped out old Opel Manta . We took and put an Opel GT motor in it with European heads , slapped a coat of flat black on it and a set of racing tires on slotted mag wheels and went racing . we used to blow the doors off those old guys pussy footing their Porsches and RX-7's around the track . I remember a guy coming up to my buddy Chad after one race and asked him what we had in it (probably referring to the motor) and without missing a beat my buddy says "About 500 Bucks". We let all the guys drive it just changing up the numbers on the door with electrical tape and it brought a whole new meaning to the term "Drive it like you ain't got a dime in it !" because most of them didn't .

On another note, because I am still happy to hear this story, it's nice to see that you can still have a junk yard race car. My parents, uncles, etc. used to regale me with stories about building race cars out of parts they would get in the "pick-a-part". Real "American Graffiti" type of stuff. I thought those days were long gone but this story changes my mind.

what year celica gt? i had my heart set on a 74, took me 2 years to get the guy to agree to sell (for about 3x what any sane person would pay for it) and the night before, he took it for a last drive, and a truck rearranged it bad enough that it wasnt worth getting anymore

I used to road race a Manta in SCCA, loved running up at Road America

I had duel side draft Webers and some Chevy vales added to some head work + a bunch of other things. Not the fastest Manta by any means. One of the MN drivers qualified faster at Road America then a buddy of mine in his '69 Camaro that was always in the top 3 finishers. Don stated he couldn't believe he was following this guy around the track.

Things sure have changed, now I'm looking at a 5" lift, big knobby tires at low pressures and driving slow at extreme angles
