The birth of the <span style="color: #CC0000"><span style="font-style: italic"><span style="font-weight: bold">Critter-Nator</span></span></span>!!!!!!

Well fellas, finally got a recent project finished for myself. With spring coming on the local groundhog and coyote population should be VERY leary.

The project started off with a Speedy Gonzalez built Remington 700 chambered in .223 Remington with a .250 neck that'll cycle unturned brass flawlessly. I procured the action off of a fellow Hide member here a few months ago.

The specs on the action are as follows:

*Remington 700 SS tuned action gone thru by Speedy
*Speedy tuned factory 700 trigger with Wolff springs @ 1.5-2#
*Blackstar cryo'd and lapped Krieger 1-12" fluted tube
*Chambered by Speedy in .223 w/a .250 NK.
*Standard BDL bottom metal, box and follower
*Barrel is 16 5/8" from rear of lug to muzzle
*Tapers from 1.250" at lug to 1.075" at the muzzle
*Complete action weight, just over 6.5#

Here's the skinny on my own handy work.....

I had an older HS Precision 700P stock lying around and flew in with the mods. to it, mods. as follows:

*BBL channel opened up from factory 700P contour
*Fore-end clipped/shortened 2" approximately
*Relocated front swivel studs, both drilled and tapped
*Skim bedded action w/Marine-Tex from tang to 1/4" ahead of lug
*Minimal fill work and my own version of a Desert GAP motiff

After I intially opened up the barrel channel (do all my own stock work to include mods, bedding and paint), I took her to the range with some "home grown" loads and she showed a lotta promise. After the initial range outing, I didn't care for the length of the fore-end as it only had 3 1/2" or so of barrel hung out front. That led to me clipping the snout off the HS appoximately 2" and giving her a "nose job" if you will. I think this is gonna make a helluva little varmint rig and at only 36 7/8" OAL, she's a handy little bugger! Have a boat-load of 52gr SMK's and 52gr Berger FBHP-V's loaded up to try out in the VERY near future!!

If I can keep my rifle ADD from kicking in & hang on to her, a CDI or similiar bottom metal may be in her future. I really like the thought of an AICS 10 round .223 mag hanging outta the bottom. May even send her out to have the snout threaded, time will tell.....

Here was a before pic of the rifle before all the afformentioned stock work was completed......

Enough jaw jackin", on to the pics.......

As pictured with a Burris XTR 3-12, Illum. Ballistic Mil-Dot in TPS lows on an EGW 20 MOA steel rail & a Harris 6-9 BRM-S w/a Pod-Loc.........

Thats a nice looking rig. I like the look of the short, large diameter barrels. Good job on the stock camo as well. Looks good!

Re: The Critter-Nator!! Varmints Beware!!

I wouldn't waste a whole lot of $$$ on ammo for that evil-looking pipe if I were you. I'm pretty sure the critters will just come out of their holes with their hands in the air when you point it in their direction (LOL). Very nice!

Thanks for all the comments guys! I am looking forward to giving her a good run at the range here in the near future. As for the work, a couple of the guys here have some of my handywork in hand.

DT, added a before pic for you. The nose job definitely helped the appearance of the rig. As for how she handles, the little outfit is actually balanced rather well and points like a dream.
