I have a obsession with mafia movies, and this one by far is in the top 3 along with The Godfather and Casino. Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, Daniel Craig, and Jude Law all do a outstanding job in this depiction of 1930s era. Between the cinematography and outstanding compositions the movie really takes back. Also Tom Hanks is spot on as he is in all his movies. If you haven't seen i highly recommend you pick it up or watch it on HBO if you can catch it.

Agreed. Saw this when it came out in theaters and loved it. Tom Hanks plays a great gangster, surprisingly, and the understated nature of the movie makes the audience really focus on the morals dilemmas of that lifestyle. As a period piece, the cars, clothes and guns all make the move that much more credible. Excellent rental.

You don't get to see Tom Hanks as a baddass every day. As a matter of fact, I guess this is the only role he's ever had where he wasn't the nicest guy in the world, which he is in real life from what I understand.

Its funny most people don't know this. Max Allen Collins best work from what I have read.

You put Casino in the Top 3 instead of Goodfellas? Casino is like the longer, more boring, less intelligent version of Goodfellas. Still great by any standard, though.

I do like Road to Perdition. Another good Irish mafia movie to watch is Miller's Crossing if you haven't seen that.

Since you have HBO, have you been watching Boardwalk Empire? Another great Irish mobster series. One of the characters, Richard Harrow, is a sniper from WW I. He takes out a mobster from a hotel window across the street from a cafe with an Enfield 1917. The shot traveled 10 yards after going through glass to hit the target, so I don't know how realistic it was, but interesting to see on HBO.

What I want to know is, why is Casino on like every other night on Starz or Encore, but the only time Goodfellas is on it's the ridiculously edited version on AMC. I mean, why bother cleaning that movie up so old people won't faint over all those mean ol dirty words. It destroys the entire idea of it. Scarface too. It's actually kinda funny to see how the censors handle fuck being said in some form about a thousand times, though. I hate edited for tv versions of great movies, if you hadn't noticed.

I dislike Goodfellas just in my own sense. It's a fantastic movie, but overall i hate the ending and can't stand that the movie is centered around Ray Liotta. I adore Deniro as a mobster type actor and since Casino is generally centered around just him and Joe Peschi I put it above Goodfellas.

I started watching Boardwalk Empire and just kinda stopped, it was good i just lost track of it i guess.

Love the scene where Hanks finally catches up with Newman on the street. Jude laws character ranks up there with Sugar from Not a country for old men as far as villains. IMO. I get more into the mafia books than the movies.

Couldn't agree more, i get chills everytime i see that scene. Only word to describe i can think of is Epic. I've searched countless times to find that scene at a high res for a wallpaper for my PC. Having a wallpaper of the far view of Newman just sitting there along holding on to the car door handle would be sweet. Cinematography is absolutely stunning. Paul Newman is a beast also. "I'm glad it was you" man that scene is epic haha.

I remember when this movie came out. I had just buried my father, and I was painting the living room on a Saturday, and my wife came home at 9PM after another long day with her Girlfriends in the old neighborhood. I told her I was going to see a movie, and she needed to make up her mind if building a family with me was more important than seeing her friends and parents every day.
When I came back she had packed everything she owned and left. i never saw her again.
    Guess she made her choice.

I want a 1911 that makes a racking sound when you shake it (Hanks going down the hall to kill the dude in the tub), or fires three shots from a hammer down position without cycling (shooting the dude in the tub).

    Otherwise, pretty cool flick.

Yep, you'll drive yourself crazy looking for anything resembling correct when it comes to firearms in movies. With the exception of Michael Mann's stuff. Heat and Collateral both were pretty well done in that respect. Mann gives a shit about that stuff which is not the case with most Hollywood types. Even James Caan in Thief did alright and that was one of Mann's earlier efforts.

Hahaha, if that bothers you don't watch any of the old westerns or John Wayne war movies! The snap-n-pop firearms and exaggerated deaths will torture you.

Of course I've quit looking for the knives that sound like they are being ran on shaprening steel every time they move.....

I thought the mivie was good, and there weren't any other bothersome parts until I heard the autoracking 1911. Jude's character is shooting a very cool period correct piece it seems-looks like a Savage 1907 pistol.
