I can hear it already, here we go again !!
I took a long hard look today at a Sako bolt and I really cannot see how such problems arise from the sako conversion on a Remy 700 and these problems never occur with the actual Sako itself. Can anyone explain this, we've heard the debate before but why then does the Sako extractor give no problems in the Sako rifle and does give problems in the Remmy, Im mean the extractor is no different in the Sako than it is in the Remmy when the conversion is done, why then do these occasional blow outs occur only in the Remmy, am I missing something here or what.

Re: The Sako extractor revisited

the ejector position tends to eject up not out one a converted rem. I believe PTG makes a bolt with correct ejector position for a sako extractor.

If you want some more opinions on this conversion on Remington bolts I would post a message here.

This subject comes up quite often on Benchrest.com .
I have changed my own mind on this over the years and now believe that this is NOT a really great idea .

Do a search -read all the posts and decide for yourself.

Re: The Sako extractor revisited

No matter what anyone says there will always be two different opinions.

That being said more and more of the custom action makers are going away from the Sako conversion to the mini M16 type extractor for a reason.

Both the Sako and the M16 are not ideally suited for the Remington design. Safety for some isn't the issue it's the function with the Remington that can cause issues and it has nothing to do with how it's installed.

Even if it's installed correctly it can still cause issues depending on caliber, short or long action, scope base one is using, scope one is using and its position on the rifle and so on.

Except for limited reasons I recommend one stick with the Remington extractor.
