I was planning to cut my barrel back from 28" to 22" for a can. The rifle has been shooting very well from day one. Just as a precaution, do to some things I had heard about barrels from this particular company, I decided to slug the barrel prior to cutting. I didn't want to run into an issue of cutting it at a point that may be detrimental to accuracy. Well I slugged it and you can feel the barrel actually open up just slightly from a point about 2" forward of the chamber to a point about 4" from the muzzle. At 4 inches from the muzzle it feels to go back to the same size as just ahead of the chamber , and the last inch steps in tighter again. One setp up in diameter and 2 setps down. Shoots great currently, but really pisses me off that I have 3 or 4 more barrels from this company sitting in reserve currently. All that I have used from them have shot very well, but we have to keep them as long as possible for it to happen.

Just have to decide if I'm goign to keep running this barrel till the groups start opening up, replace the barrel, or sell it to someone that wants the current configuration.

Don't have the log in front of me but only about 800

This company says they lap a taper from breach to muzzle, it's more like a set of stairs. those points that it tightens up at do feel realy gradual, is more like hitting a wall.

chambered in .308. I removed 1.5" at the muzzle when it was chambered, and 1" at the breach end as well. You couldn't tell anything was wring with it unless you slugged it. I'll be slugging the other barrels I have from this company, that haven't been fit, tomorrow.

Let us know what you find on the other barrels (all the same or ?).....could be just one bad. Either way .....hope it works out for you.

Well this is interesting.

I too am interested as to how this works out. When you are describing the different diameters of the bore, that is a new one on me.

No, I don't know everything, but for a custom barrel to be as such, I'm sure curious as to why.

Factory Military barrels used to be stepped on the outside, but now you're saying that a custom barrel is stepped on the inside?

Let us know....

The company tried to lap a taper into the bores. In throey this can work extremely well, but the guy doing the lapping must be very practiced at it to pull it off well. I checked 4 more barrels that I have from this company. 2 of them have the same pattern of loosening up a bit then choking up at the muzzle. One gradualy tightens up until a point at about 22" from the breach then opens slightly, and the 4th should be a really good shooter as it just tightens up the whole way from Breach to muzzle this one was deffinately not lapped by the same guy as the others were. The loosening and tightening I'm talking aboutare just enough on these barrels to feel a deffinate change in the amount of pressure required on the rod to push the slug down the bore, and should still shoot very well provided you locate the crown in the tighter section of the bore. The rifles I have used this same brand on in the past have all shot very well, but they don't allow much for flexability in locating the crown. Most likely I'm going to list these blanks for sale at a bit of a loss just to move them out.
