Re: thinkig of building a AR-10

First thing you need to do is pick your platform. Do you want an AR-10, DPMS or LaRue there are probably others. This will depend on what accessories (and cost) and magazines you can run. Once you figure that out you can then source your parts from all the various makers. Or you can pick up a built one, learn to shoot it and change as needed to fit you. AR-10's are not as forgiving to shoot as bolt guns.

.02 for the pot

Cheers,

Re: thinkig of building a AR-10

I would start with a baseline DPMS LR 308 you can even get the fluted match barrels and then see what you want to change on it.

(Hint) You will won't to change out the trigger first thing.

2nd.. They are a little over gased so some people get adjustable gas blocks. I don't have an issue with this and left it alone.

(3rd) If you handload then 168g and 178g AMAX is a good start.

Re: thinkig of building a AR-10

Like stated above, you need to pick your platform first. Not all .308 ARs are created equal, and parts aren't always interchangeable like they are in the AR-15 platform. I suggest the MA-Ten platform, since it offers the most options and accepts parts from Armalite, DPMS, and Knight's Armament.

If you choose this route, you can use either AR-10 pattern barrels and BCGs, or DPMS style, but keep in mind that the thread pattern for the barrel nut is DPMS.

Just my .02. Good luck brother!

The Armalites are nice but you are like stated above limited to their own mags. If you go with a DPMS style platform you can use DPMS mags along with Magpul mags, which are sweet. The magpul mags are the way to go so you want to be able to shoot them. DPMS will use them and most of your custom big AR platform builders use these platforms because you have all the mags to use. I am having one built now by Scott at Specialized Dynamics in .260. It uses the DPMS/Magpul mags and I like using the magpul mags.

The MA TEN is awesome product but you will be hard pressed to keep it on budget (<$1500) especially if you do it right and use quality components.

To do that (keep on budget) you might need to look for a used or basic DPMS or similar, IMO.

Re: thinkig of building a AR-10

I love my DPMS FWIW.

I want to pretty it up now as it's a little plain and I would like a better stock instead of the basic m4 style. Having an AR-10 now makes me want to build a nice little AR15 for blowing through ammo though.

Re: thinkig of building a AR-10

I love magpul mags that's all i bought for my AR build, im guessing ill go that way. thax alot guys. i like that MA-10 look though but the mag i wouldn't be able to use the pmags. i know its crazy to choose on a mag, but im really not i know alot of guys who have dpms, go i know their gtg

Here's a write up I did on my Mega MA-Ten Mono. What I have all on mine is well above your price range of $1500, in the ball park of about 7-900 or so above your price range, but I have a lot of parts on there that aren't necessary for a build.

Running the numbers through my head quick you might be able to build a bare bones Mega for close to your price range. What I would suggest is some where along these lines.

Mega MA-Ten receiver set
Standard A2 stock
Fulton LPK
Trigger of choice
Rainier Select barrel of your length of choice
DPMS BCG
Rainier Gas Block and Gas Tube
JP or Troy Free Float tube
Muzzle device of your choice

This a simple basic list of parts that will get you "close", but more likely will still be above your range. The reason I say "close" is that there's shipping involved, FFL transfer fees, "your choice" is a big range in price, and whether you can get some items on sale helps.

It is feasible to do a budget build 308 but the more you cut corners on spending, it equates to quality components. To be honest, do your homework and spec out your build how you see fit. If it takes you a little longer to build it since you want to get a $150 trigger instead of using a gritty 1 stage from a kit-then wait a little longer. Start purchasing parts that you are set on using, and try to get as many to keep shipping lower.

And just a heads up, building a 308 is theoretically the same as doing a 5.56 but it's not. Some of your parts might not play well with others, mine worked out nicely but there are some builds that have had malfunctions. And unfortunately when building a gun, if it doesn't work there's no one person to send it to. There are guys here who have a wealth of knowledge to help if a problem arises but there's no guarantee. Just keep that at the back of your head.
