Hey guys I'm thinking about gathering some parts for a .308 build maybe around $1,500 or so. Here's my list:

Remington Short Action (maybe Surgeon RSR if I can't find a shorty Rem)
Rock Creek 20" heavy fluted MTU 5R barrel (sending money for one today)
Probably a B&C or HS stock if they can be inlet for a larger barrel??
Probably BDL bottom metal for now
Timney or Regular Remmy trigger
Maybe have Jon Beanland put it together. He's about 1.5 hrs from me I think.

How would that be for a good shooting budget .308? I thought about a stock remmy, but if I play it smart I may be able to get what all I want and go half ass custom...

Re: Thinking about a Good, but budget, .308???

Any true action with a Rock barrel put on by a competent smith will the a tack driver. As far as the HS and B&C stocks. They come with a varmint barrel inlet but some simple 80 grit sandpaper and a dowel or deep socket will fix that in just a few minutes. Otherwise, it looks like you have your bases covered.

One question, If your gonna put a good barrel on a trued action, Why .308. Why not 260 or 7-08.

I didnt price any of the stuff on the list, but it looked like you will far exceed your budget. I would get a new Remington 700 (LTR or 5R), which you can get for $950 and just change the barrel. I think just the parts from your list would be over the $1500 and that doesnt include labor.

Re: Thinking about a Good, but budget, .308???

I think you are a little light on your build price.
I talked to a barrel maker about putting a barrel on my Lawton 7000 action, with a brake I was the shy side of $1000. and that doesn't take into account my $800. action. (I am keeping this project on hold for a while.)
I have owned 2 5R's and for the money they are a great rifle.
Happy shooting, SScott

I am pretty much putting together what you are trying to build but in .260 rem and all said and done you're going to be around the 2K mark.It may be cheaper to just buy a solid, new 308 rifle instead of a " half assed" custom as you put it.

Re: Thinking about a Good, but budget, .308???

Well figuring a little more today and talking to Jon Beanland I will be higher on my price, but I don't really want a factory rifle. Also I want to do the .308 for cheaper shooting, ease of getting ammo, etc. I have a 7mm saum for long range shooting, etc. and a Surgeon 1086 to build a .284 or 6.5x284 at some point. I just want a .308 for plinking/learning. I could go factory, but I'll end up changing everything anyways and having more in it than a custom...I know me!

Trued 700 with trigger - $650-$700ish
Heavy Fluted 20" Rock MTU Barrel - $560 with install/chamber (should be on the way pretty soon)
Stock - $250 for BC (I'm high maintenance...probably end up with mcm)
Misc. - $100 +/-

That's around $1,600 could probably get a Surgeon RSR for 100 more. I think it could turn into a nice rifle really...
