this would be on 308 twist vs. barrel length like 10-11-12 vs 16'' 18''20''22 at ranges up to 1000 yds from 147 grain to 190 grain ..please dont flame me on this one reason is because of so many ar and bolt are getting into short barrels now ....weight and mobility yes i know you have losses and gains ...thxs

I recommend you pick up a copy of Bryan Litz's book: "Applied ballistics for long range shooting" It's a great read, and will answer 95% of your questions.

I have to agree on the recommendation of Brian's book. I would also highly recommend "Hatcher's Notebook" MG J Hatcher.

But if I may address "testing". My granddaughter did an 8th grade science project on barrel lenghts for hunting. Trying to determine the near perfect barrel lenght for a hunting rifle that would give ease of carrying, yet leave you with the remaining energy for ethical kills on hunting animals.

She used a Model 700 with a 26 inch barrel, cutting it two inches at a time, to 16 inches and determining the veloctiy loss. Her goal was to determine the shortest barrel that would give her 1800 Ft Lbs of energy at 300 yards (normal Max hunting range).

She wanted a standard round, factor ammo, and sutable for elk hunting. She used Remington 180 grn corlocks.

Based on her findings, using her gun and ammo combo, she determined 22 inchs met her goal.

Whether it means anything or not is up for grabs, but she and her little friend had a ball, learned something and got their "A"s

Other tests similar to the one kraigWY described by his daughter have been done using a variety of rifles and pistols. The results of many of these tests can be found online by doing a little Google searching.

Intersting topic and i have read a bunch on this, but could not tell you where(google).
Some of the gun (paper) magazine writers have written on the topic..
It almost seems moot after a point.
I mean we all want to hit with the 1st shot, endless innovations, theories, new bullets, propellants, and barrels will baffle any sane person.
Some have said ,find you a rifle, find your ammo and zero and shoot the barrel out of it.
Time over money is what I have now.
When the money comes in ,it will be experiment after experiment.
I am not saying dont research or whatever, just have fun doing it,use what you have available.

Pm sent as well.
