Never had any issues with my 338 LM Lapua Brass...7-8 firings (Left cases).

Bought what was allegedly 338 LM Lapua Brass 1x fired. Below are the results (Right cases).

Getting used brass isn't a problem provided you deal with someone who isn't trying to rip you off. I sometimes sell brass on here and I'm honest about it and include pictures. The guy selling that trashed .338 brass was just selling his garbage hoping you'd be too dumb or ignorant to know the difference. That brass would have gone in my recycle bucket for sure and I've discarded brass for less. That's NOT 1x brass! FGGM comes up often enough as 1x and usually, almost always, comes in the original box. I've got a good bit it turns out, and pretty much all is in the boxes. 1x brass should look basically new. The rims shouldn't show any use at all, maybe ONE extractor mark.

I've bought used brass, I get a lot of it that way in fact. When I get military LC brass, I either get it from the military auctions or a smaller lot from someone else who got a lot at auction. Prices are low. But even being 1x, the brass almost always includes MG brass and it can be damaged or destroyed in that one shot. You gotta weed those out and write 'em off. I'm working through two drums of .50BMG LC brass, all fired through an M2HB, and I run into several cases out of a few hundred that get discarded. Maybe more than that. Cracked necks, dented shoulders, dented body, etc. With 5.56, same thing, the SAW trashes brass sometimes. You gotta pay attention.

But with small lots? I'd want pictures. I'd wanna know why he's selling 1x brass, because for reloaders that's what you WANT, the 1x stuff out of your rifle. You'll have to full length size it, then fire it in your rifle, THEN you can go about sizing it to your rifle. Unless you just use SAAMI specs. If the guy is selling small lots of 1x brass, then it should be coming in the original ammunition box. That's how it's usually sold. If the guy reloads, I'd be wary, again because of that 1x fired thing --that brass is more valuable to the owner than even new brass! So if the guy reloads, I tend to shy away.

It's certainly a buyer beware, but if someone screws you, make sure to list 'em in the good/bad guys thread. Those cases are ready to come apart and he knew that when he sent 'em to you. I'd demand a refund first, then resort to that thread, maybe talk to a moderator about kicking his ass off if that's the best he can do for other members. That shit isn't too welcome around here, and people around here don't take to kindly to ripoffs and scams, especially from other members. We generally have a good thing going here, good people, honest people. We need to keep it that way, so report his ass to someone (not Lowlight, he's busy enough) if it happened here. Good luck.

I buy my brass new from Lapua. I get it in 1000rd. cases and for .308 it brings the price down to something like $60 per 100 or $600 per 1000. .338 costs more, yeah, but it's still cheaper to get it that way than any other way.

@Strykervet So let me clarify, I do my due diligence sometimes that is not enough. I got pictures and asked the right questions. The member got the brass from a friend he was getting some brass also for his personal use. He doesn't have a 338 or his friend doesn't seem to reload. Everything looked good. I loaded them and fired them, the 4 on the right are my first firing (the brass allegedly second) for that brass. I loaded and fired 10 pieces prior to the components, no issues. I have a few things I need to do to the other 120 pieces before I fully discard the lot. Definitely a lesson and wanted to at least bring awareness. Thanks for the comments.

I got some once fired brass from a friend and it was junk. This is factory ammo that was once fired and the case was swollen above the web and had some pretty bad extractor marks.

Let me rephrase what I mean. I will buy used brass, but I want it to be a reputable person I can trust. I like Sage's reloading and what no and I would do business with friends or with someone that can be vouched for. It still seems sketchy to me sometimes though.

The question is how much headspace did it have for the first virgin firing, and how much headspace did the brass have in your chamber when you fired it?

Also, were the primer pockets tight when you seated the primers? That's another indicator of how the brass has been treated previously and whether it's truly 1x fired.

I bought some once fired range brass from a guy several years ago. It was Remington brass for the 300 Win Mag. I loaded some up and had one or two cases show a crack toward the bottom of the case. The crack seemed lower than what I've experienced when over sizing the brass and getting head separation. I sectioned the cases and it looked to me that the wall thickness of the brass was just thin to start out with.

If you have brass that is already sized 11 thou from "fired" headspace dimensions, I would personally want to fire form it properly before using further. That could most easily be done by jamming a bullet hard into the lands (hard enough so that bolt close is moderately difficult) with a reduced powder charge. That will hold the case head firmly against the bolt face and allow the brass shoulder to expand and conform to the chamber. If you shoot brass with that much headspace without jamming a bullet, the case will be forward in the chamber. When it fires it expands horizontally and grips the chamber walls, then the rear of the case expands backwards to meet the bolt face pulling brass from the side walls and potentially causing the case head separation that you see.

If you buy fired brass you are taking a chance. Mostly a small chance but a chance. All bad brass is not necessarily a rip off. Some brass is just junk. And some brass has been fired in a chamber with loose tolerances. The same thing goes for range brass. I shoot a lot of range brass but if I'm hunting or competing I buy it new and keep up with the times fired.

You may be able to cheat a little out of it by sizing again with a fl or body die, but keep the die from touching the shoulder. Will depend on your die vs the die used by the other guy.
