Just picked up a new rig on a impulse buy. Was at the local gun shop and saw a HB bolt gun. Took a look and it was a Rem700 VLS varmint in .223 with the tube shortened to 21" and target crowned riding in a heavy laminated stock. The trigger has been done (well) and looks/feels like the bolt has been lapped as well. Sitting on top is a pristine looking Leupold Vari-X III 6.5-20 X 40 EFR (fine hair/dot reticle) with a sunshade in leupold rings and bases.

The rifle is in pristine condition , I havent shot it yet, going to tear it down this weekend, look at the bedding, torque everything correctly, plug, soak and clean the bore, etc. Then it will be range test ready.

My question is this, what do you suppose this setup is worth? I paid $500.00 and feel like barring some real big suprise at the range, I stole the thing. (metaphorically speaking) Seems to me the glass, rings and bases are worth what I paid for the whole package.

Would not normally post a "look at my new toy" thread but just feel like I may have hit a home run with this one.

Thoughts?

The proof will be in the shooting, but like you said I think you did well. Very well!

To be honest either way I would asy you didnt get hurt. Action, stock, base, rings scope, trigger, bottom metal, etc. would be worth way more tham $500.00. Action alone is worth almost that.

Re: Thoughts on new aquisition

An update on the 700, I plugged the bore and thourougly cleaned the rifle, removed it from the stock and found a nice Timney Trigger and bedding job. Put it back together and will get it to the range soon and will post up some results.

I will have to see if I can post a pic, I have not been real sucessful doing this in the past. Think this one was a slam dunnk barring a suprise from the bench.

It sounds like a Pawned rifle that someone didn't come back for and the Pawn owner didn't have much into it anyways so you got a great deal.

Agreed.

Re: Thoughts on new aquisition

This place is a gun shop not a pawn shop. What I think may have happened is this: They are a high volume shop, near a medium sized city, lots of novice customers and lots of novice guys working in the shop with lots of employee turnover. I think what may have happened was somebody saw it as a basic wood stocked 700ADL (the 700 Varmint designation does not appear on the rollmark just Remington 700) priced it and did not account for the trigger and optics or planned to take the glass off. I suspect the seller was somebody who inherited the gun or really needed money and let it go for $300.00 or so.I think some kid whos only interested in glocks with 30rd mags, AK's and mossberg chainsaws said "another lame hunting gun" and stuck it on the rack. I am just glad I walked in when I did.

Because whoever set this thing up knew exactly what he was doing, this thing is a shooter. Went to the range yesterday and all I have to say is holy shit batman....

Range report to come today....

(I will post some pics if I can, I suck at doing that, got to get them off my phone and on the laptop and uploaded....)

Re: Thoughts on new aquisition

yeah, sounds like one of those "I have to buy it on price alone" deals. My dad always said you get a few of those in your lifetime. Have to capitalize when they come up. Nice grab!

Range Report:

Ok, so I took the 700 to the range and did some testing, conditions were about 40 deg, sunny with a 5 mph breeze. The rifle was throughly cleaned prior to shooting, no copper fouling whatsoever was evident.

The Vari-X III 6.5-20X40 was set at 12X and rifle was bench rested. I tested 2 loads on this trip, Hornady 55gr V-Max and Black Hills 68 gr Match factory loads.

The 68 gr Black Hills BTHPM loads printed .78"ctc groups at 50 yds and 1.55"ctc groups at 100 yds, nothing special for a tuned bolt gun to be sure. Thats said, the accuracy was outstanding with the Hornady 55gr V-max load, this load printed .21"ctc groups at 50 yds and .66"ctc groups at 100 yds.

The trigger is outstanding, glass rod crisp, light and short. This rifle is simply superb with the Hornady factory loads, I have no doubt I could make this an all day single hole shooter with some careful handloads.

I could not be happier with the rifle, I was a little leary seeing that barrel had been shortened when I bought it but it clearly did not affect accuracy. I think that given the rifles quality, setup and the optics my $500.00 investment was a huge score.

Glad I went with instinct and picked her up.

Re: Thoughts on new aquisition

Sounds like you got a slammin deal on that. I have that rifle with the 26" barrel. It loves 40gn Hornady VMax pills .010" off lands, over 26.5gns Varget with CCI400 primers in any casing i put it in. It shoots under 1/2 inch 5 shot groups at 100yds all day with some most groups closer to the .4. I have had some .3 groups recently.

Re: Thoughts on new aquisition

Thanks bro, I plan to work on some handloads this fall after archery tournament season warps up for 2012. Will give some 40gr V-Max's a try, In checked the twist and its 1" in 12" so I figure they should be solid pills.

Yes, I think I cleaned up witn this deal, its a new favorite boomstick to be sure.
