Got to shoot my buddies Remington 700 tac in 308 with 20 inch barrel today. Was fun, hit some steel out deep. He was thinking about selling it and I wanted to get your guys thoughts. I was thinking maybe buy it and shoot it a year or two and get better (I’m new to bolt action) and maybe sell it and get into something the next step up. So I guess my question is do they last? hold value? Seems to be built like a tank

My first and still main precision oriented rifle is a R700 SPS TAC in 223. I ditched the factory stock for a greyboe and with a little load work up the thing is a tack driver. I have shot so shockingly small groups, I think it easily holds sub 3/4 MOA and honestly may be closer to 1/2. I do not feel it holds me back at all. That said I haven't competed with it so maybe it would fail in some respect in that forum.

As Harman said if its a good price I would buy it. With the amount of aftermarket parts you can customize it to suit your needs as you go.

It will get you a long way down the road . there's so much aftermarket support for the 700 platform you can do what ever you want . In a couple of years if you decide to move to a different caliber you can you have a wider variety of cartridges that work in a short action and use the 308 bolt face .

I'm going to say... buy an Accuracy International AT for your SA caliber indevors. Your going to end up there anyway. Just skip all time and money spent trying to modify or improve the 700. If you don't want to shoot 308 anymore, buy a prefit from a 100 different places to shoot 6.5cm 260 rem, etc etc. Gives you options. You will already have one of the most accurate and bomb proof rifles right from the get go. If it doesnt shoot its most likely the shooter. On the rem 700s, its a crap shoot. If finances allow, spend the 4k on an AT SFP folder. I know of countless people that went down this road and spent 3x the money before ending up in the same place... an Accuracy International.

I just put the same rifle together and I would say buy it if you can get as in the pictures for 1000$ to 1200$. Then add a Area 419 Hellfire break to it, it will greatly reduce the recoil on it. Also, the Remingtion 700 platform has allot of aftermarket parts support so you can upgrade the trigger, action and barrel as you get better and want to grow.
