Hey there I am looking to get a Sako TRG 42 in 338lm , I’ve always wanted , I was curious to hear anyone’s hands on experience with them and what there thoughts were ? Thanks

I've had one for a few years. It has no coldbore adjustment. I'm 6'2" and a 172lbs. No stock adjustment required. I have a factory folding stock and have never bothered to install it. The factory bi-pod is fantastic. It has never had a misfeed or failure to eject. The trigger is my favorite ever. The factory brake is very efficient. It is, of course, very accurate. The first load I tried was the end of my load development. This was a reduced practice load with 250gr. SMK. I tried a load with the only change being a less expensive 250gr. Hornady Interlock. The point of impact was so close to identical at a 100yds. that I just started shooting the cheapies.

I can't tell you how it functions in freezing weather, snowstorms, sandstorms or any other lousy conditions because I avoid shooting in those conditions but all reports are that the TRGs are utterly reliable. If you use the factory brake the concussive effect is noticeable and gave me a headache. I whined about this in another thread and was instructed to take two Tylenol before I'd shoot. I don't use Tylenol so two aspirin solved the problem.

It is exactly what it is supposed to be and that is a military grade sniper rifle. If you buy one you will not be disappointed.

What Quarter Horse said plus it functions in freezing weather I've taking mine elk hunting in Hells Canyon in early December. Get a suppressor for it, its much better than a muzzle brake. Its the best .338 you can buy for the money, some might point you towards a savage but its still a savage. The Ai rifles are nice but the price point is higher. The TRG is just as accurate as the AI albeit a little lighter. Here is an old article comparing the two, Ray and zak run Thunderbeast arms. http://demigodllc.com/articles/military-338-lapua-rifles-trg42-awsm/

Awesome piece of kit for the $$$. Great features and quality. If you like a traditional style stock instead of chassis rifles the TRG is top of the heap unless you go full custom.

Thanks for the input guys , what are you using for scope mounts and the base ? I see Sako makes a factory mount the attaches to the dovetail rail any experience with those ?

I'm rocking the https://www.milehighshooting.com/spuhr-sp-4808-isms-mount-34mm-13mil-44-4moa/ spuhr with a S&B 5-25 PMII and its the perfect mount, i dont even need to use the zero stop i'm one mil above bottoming out from factory zero so i have 25 mil's i can dial to shoot way out there...

It attaches to the dovetail and has been solid probably the best way to mount a scope to a trg.

No particular problem with picatinny either. Actually, Sako delivers some TRG models with rail(s): https://www.sako.fi/rifles/sako-trg#rifles

If you have money to burn, there's also the modular TRG M10. Or the recently released TRG A1, which is sort of the old TRG in a chassis that resembles the M10.

Here's a bit of a review and comparison of the TRG A1 by guys who know their stuff - but English isn't their native language: https://finnaccuracy.com/blogs/fa-news/new-sako-trg-a1-latest-addition-to-trg-family

My TRG came with the factory 0moa rail. If I remember correctly these are pinned and loctited and require heat to remove. I just got a set of the new Burris XTR Signature rings with inserts. The inserts allow the rings to give up to 40moa.

A few years ago some owners reported having the butt-stock portion develop a crack. A poster on accurateshooter.com said this was due to a not properly torqued action screw. Something to check when you get yours.

I have a TRG-22 in 260 Remington. It wa a limited edition (only 200 made) factory rifle offered exclusively through Eurooptics. I know you were specifically asking about the 338 Lapua which I don't have, but I can tell you this. The TRG is the best rifle I have ever owned and I've owned a bunch. Absolutely no need to modify or tweak them. They are perfect right out of the box. Incredibly accurate and consistent. Also, the easiest rifle to load for that you could ever ask for. It shot virtually any match grade load beautifully.

Buy with confidence. You can't go wrong with a TRG.

Mine has a Schmit MLR 5x25 on it. When I bought mine, I did not educate my self on the gun enough. I wish I would have bought a post-2013. That being said, the only regret is the 1-12 twist. Mine is a joy to shoot, the best trigger on the market. It is a damn hammer shooting 250smk right at 3100 and in a 1/3 inch group. The favorite rifle I own.

You mentioned your hand load 250gr bullets for the trg42 just curious what kind of groups you were achieving and what the coal was of your bullet I hear the mag is too short to let you reach the lands.

J---110. Sincere apologies for not replying earlier. I read the post, got the PM and completely spaced it. Mag length is about 3.75". OAL with the 250SMK is 3.68" as recommended by Sierra. OAL with the Hornady 225gr. Interlock Soft Point (#3320) is 3.54". There was nothing scientific or even reasonable about my approach to this. Pick an H-1000 reduced load out of Sierra, their OAL and shoot. The Hornady load was a worse approach. Same H-1000 but no change in the seating die so they came out at 3.54". Groups ranged from mid .3s to mid .6s. (3 round)

When I bought the TRG it came with an extra mag., brake, tripod, and folding stock. All were new in the box. It was my intent to try it and then piece it out. After getting behind it and shooting I decided it had a home.
