Rifle Scopes Thoughts on the NF velocity reticle system

Re: Thoughts on the NF velocity reticle system

I'm not a big fan of any velocity reticles. I recommend getting a scope in MOA or MIL with turrets that match your RET. This way whatever you dial is what you also hold.

If you open for another recommendation I say go with a MIL System.

Re: Thoughts on the NF velocity reticle system

The NF V reticles work, especially out to 600Y, past that is when things start to get iffy. However...

Some fine tuning might be in order with velocity and sight in distance. I was able to tune my rifle/scope combo to match perfectly but it was 1/2 moa off at 600Y before I did. That's only 3" so it was barely off.

You could always holdover/under a tad or dial a few clicks for error also.

Re: Thoughts on the NF velocity reticle system

personally, i'm like Mike, i like just a matching system, i use mil/mil and moa/moa, i hunted with my 5.5-22x56hs zs npr2 just last weekend.

that said, if you take the right steps, the velocity reticles can work really well. you can't just go get a rifle, pick a velocity reticle scope and go shooting, but with a few easy steps, you can have a nice reticle that works perfectly

1. get your rifle

2. shoot it, and work up a specific load or factory ammo you will stick with for said rifle, the reticle works well, but they are very load specific

3. go here and put in your load http://www.nightforcereticlecalculator.com/Default.aspx
or call me, i'll help you, and i'd confirm your results with one of the tech supports at nightforce

4. get shooting

Re: Thoughts on the NF velocity reticle system

I use a MOA scope/dials with 1 MOA hashmarks. When I change a load enough so that POA at 600-800 yds moves I can then just shoot to a different hashmark. I also see a POA change between 20F and 95F. If you have a velocity reticle you loose the abiliity to make these adjustments.

Re: Thoughts on the NF velocity reticle system

I took someone out shooting long range today that hadn't done so.

I brought along my AR with it's NF 2.5-10 LV reticle and showed him how easy it is to use. We shot from 200-500Y on a 10" round and 12" IPSC steel 100Y's apart from each other with holdovers/holdoffs in the reticle, in 3-9 MPH winds. He only missed the 10" steel at 500Y once and made all the rest of the hits.

I don't shoot this particular gun much (15" barrel Armalite) and had forgotten how much I like it and the scope together as a system.

Re: Thoughts on the NF velocity reticle system

I really like my NXSc 2.5-10x32 with LV...it's amazingly accurate and incredibly fast. I'd rather spend my time shooting than doing math and dialing;)

Re: Thoughts on the NF velocity reticle system

i love them, but i've been dialing for a long time, so i really understand that side of things. i have 3 diff velocity reticles now, and they match very very good, but i tweaked the velocity of my rounds and also my zero distance.

one thing i really like on them is that they have 1 moa marks on the horizontal line for wind hold offs. i just don't see a down side to them. if you have time, dial and do your thing, but if you have an animal feeding into the timber at 675yds, then you can shoot right now with no screwing around.

i think the guys that are against them are guys that don't hunt. for targets you may as well dial up, they are not going anywhere, and it's fun to spin turrets. that said, i do think it's important to understand, how pressure, temps, weather conditions, etc affect your POI and your reticle won't work under all conditions. just because you have a 1000 yd mark to aim with doesn't mean you're going hit your target unless you know what's going on behind the scenes.
