hey gang,

I am new to long range shooting, and I'm seeking some advice on the 700.

What do you guys think about the remington 700 base sps composite they have listed on their website with an MSRP of 702? I'm assuming this rifle does not have the x-mark trigger system or a heavy, forged barrel. The rifle I really want is the 700 sps aac for a suppressor, but I don't want to invest too much money into this project because I want to get out of it as cheap as possible if I don't like long range shooting. I bring up the base 700 sps because a dealer around me is currently selling the gun in 30-06 for $400 BNIB.

My second question revolves around ammunition choice. My target range will be 600-1000 yards, and I was looking into a .243, .30-06 or a .308. I took a peek in the FAQ section in regards to round selection, but quite a few of the popular round were not listed in that thread.

Re: thoughts on the remington 700 sps and round choice

I just bought the 700SPS myself. It does have the externally adjustable trigger. And yes it does have a heavy barrel. Its a 20" barrel.
So far, I love it.. It is my first precision rifle and I couldnt be any happier. I just took it out and hit some targets at 330yds today. Most dont like the Hogue stock, but I find its great. And most will tell you the factory trigger sucks. I didnt find anything wrong with it either. It says in the manual it comes set at 3lbs. I adjusted it down 1 revolution to 2lbs (According to the manual). I find its an awesome investment and probably will never let me down.

It sounds like you purchased an SPS tactical, not a base SPS.

the 308 SPS tactical loadedwith 175gr SMK will do just jine out to 1000k withthe 20" barrel.

FYI I am at 6120"elevation and mine is doing great. I did switch to a HS takeoff stock and am runing a aac cyclone on my 308 and a m4 2000 on my 2223 sps tactical

I'm talking about this rifle, not the sps tactical. It's just the tegular sps composite.

Get the 308 if you need to shoot factory ammo, if you reload get the 243. Buy it in the varmint barrel and buy new or used HS precision or B&C or even a laminated Remington woody. Bed it yourself and have fun.

Unless you are only wanting an action to build on later in the long action verity I would pass on a 30-06. Not because it isn’t a good choice (caliber wise) but because the barrel would be a little on the thin side to shoot more than a couple rounds before it starts walking on you. If they made a varmint model I would buy one today.

You could find the AAC-SD for not too much more. It'd give you the savings of the threaded barrel. Then you'd have a better twist rate and a handy short heavy barrel. The twist rate would help help stabilize bigger pills, and work well with sub sonics. I've heard guys getting them for right around 600. The two downfalls ate the stock and trigger but it'd be that way with any of the cheaper 700's. Good Luck

i dont think you will have enough muzzle diameter to get 5/8 x24 threads and have a good shoulder.
