I just purchased a thread protector to cover the threads on my AA Overwatch 6.5G. The barrel is coated with either ceracoat or duracoat, and that includes the threads.

Needless to say, it don't just screw on. I am hesitant to wrench down on it as I know what is likely to happen. I put some anti-seize on the threads and have been tightening it by hand about an 1/8 turn every few minutes. I figure, at this rate, I will get it threaded all the way on around Christmas or New Years Day, maybe.

What am I missing here? Is there an easier way without sending it to either Alexander Arms or a riflesmith. My tap and die set does not include a 3/4" x 28 die.

I don't like the idea of my barrel being threaded and those fine threads just waiting for a bump or nick.

Re: Thread Protector Over Coated Threads?

Try some "Sav-O-Grain" paint stripper...the kind that eats epoxy. It comes as a gel and can be carefully painted on. Might soften enough to wire brush out of the thread bottoms.

Thanks DD and FNP.

I masked off anything that might show, used a lightly coated paper towel with carb cleaner and let it sit on the threads for about 5 minutes. I then carefully used a fine wire brush and gently brushed the threads until they were cleaned up. A little anti-seize and on it went.

Since the thread protector and barrel are both SS, should I keep anti-seize on the threads? I plan to keep some on anyway, but just curious what everyone else does.

I use the copper based anti seize but you really dont need it.

+1 I use copper too, just because that is what I have.

Although I doubt you'll be threading your thread protector on tight enough to gall the threads, it is still better safe than sorry. And that way the anti-seize is on there for when you screw a can etc on. Even if you don't put anti-seize on, if you have it on your can threads, and you screw the can on, then take it off and put the protector on, your protector will get some on it.

So just go ahead and put some on to be sure.
