I just bought a Savage 10 Precision Carbine with 5R rifling online but I just noticed it has a threaded barrel. I live in NY. Is anyone aware of any legal issues with threaded barrels on a bolt action in NY? I know that this is a no-go on semi-autos but I'm not sure if any of the AWB rules have any impact on bolt guns.
I looked all over locally for a 10PC and no-one here said they could get one, their wholesalers were sold out etc, and I didn't want to miss this chance.
I'd appreciate it greatly if anyone who knows could share some knowledge. Thanks

Here's a link to Article 265 of NYS Penal Law

I believe you're fine with a bolt action rifle that has a threaded muzzle.

Re: Threaded barrels in NY state?

I don't believe there is any problems with it on a bolt action. And you *can* have a threaded barrel on a semi auto, but you need to permanently attach a muzzle break to it.

Re: Threaded barrels in NY state?

Bolt actions are fine. It's the semi autos that it's a no no. I have 2 TRG's and those barrels are factory threaded. NY has there own weapon ban laws pertaining to semi autos and threaded barrels. It's those damn A@#holes in Albany.

Re: Threaded barrels in NY state?

yeah your GTG, threads only regulate assault weapons, bolt are not catagorized as assault weapons

Re: Threaded barrels in NY state?

I just got back from Herb Philipsons (kind of a big sporting goods / surplus store) and they had Century AR-15s with what looked exactly like A2 flash hiders. Are these things grandfathered in somehow because the rifles are refurbished? These laws seem completely arbitrary. You can have a semi-auto carbine, but it has to be flashy at night. Unless it's old.. then it's ok.
Then there's the local gun store guys. "Do what the hell you want on your own farm, as long as nobody's watchin"

Re: Threaded barrels in NY state?

If your muzzle brake is screwed on, then it'll be pinned and welded. If you look closely at the bottom of the brake, you'll probably notice some discoloration where the manufacturer machined the weld to blend with the brake prior to finishing the metal. If you can un-thread that muzzle brake off that brand new AR-15 exposing the threads, then it probably should not have been sold in the New York State market. Read Article 265 of NYS Penal Law.

Re: Threaded barrels in NY state?

unless the flashhider on the ar-15 is pinned and welded to the muzzle, it is ILLEGAL to own in ny state. on the off chance it is a preban, then yes you would be able to have all the "evil" features. if the reciever does not match any of the recievers within the attached link, then it is probably not a preban. http://www.northeastshooters.com/vbullet...e-under-the-AWB

Re: Threaded barrels in NY state?

Unless it's preban, it has to be a muzzle brake on an AR not a flash hider. If the rifle is preban, it can have a flash suppressor as it is called in NYS Penal Law, and it does not have to be pinned or welded. On an AR made after September 14th, 1994, a muzzle brake can be removable as long as the barrel isn't threaded. An example of that would be a muzzle brake that's pressed on and cross pinned, or a muzzle brake held on by set screws.

Re: Threaded barrels in NY state?

Went to one of the local stores today to arrange the FFL transfer and was told that no gun store in NY would transfer this gun for me... I told the clerk I did lots of research and assured him it's good to go. I think the clerk was under the impression that the barrel was internally threaded, since the external threads are obscured by the muzzle cap in the photo? I told him to go ahead and get the gun in and I'd sort out any problems if necessary.

Re: Threaded barrels in NY state?

Should be no problems with a bolt gun and a threaded barrel in NYS. The Buffalo Gun Center in Cheektowaga has a local smith thread and install A2 flash suppressors on Remington 700's. People keep getting the laws for semi-auto and other actions confused.
