Anyone have a solution for dialing in and threading a 16in AR barrel in the headstock? I thought about making a mandrel that fits over the barrel extention and through the spider so I could dial in the rear. Between centers works, but I hate having to re crown after, and when I do cut a crown I need the 4 jaw chuck which brings me back to the original question.
ANy ideas?

I think the mandrel idea is great. It needs to be rigid enough to hold true.

On a short barrel, I normally rough them in using a collet on a separate lathe to within .075".

Then dial it in with a fixture to the bore and make light cuts to spec.
