Throwing Varget.

Varget has been a pain to work with for me. Sometimes throwing it out of my RCBS Uniflow measure will yeild variations of almost .5gr - which means lots of "throw back" overshoots and tedious trickling.

I forgot to put the fancy $6 RCBS baffle in the measure the other day and for some reason it was throwing much more consistently. I played around with it and so far have found the small metering drum, a full hopper, and no baffle to be surprisingly consistent. I hope I can help to limit someone elses frustration here.

Setup up to throw a little under desired weight and then use a powder trickle to get it perfect.

i know it is awesome when you get a good throw.... but i couldn't agree more.... set the measure for slightly under and trickle the rest.... once you get a rhythm down... tap up twice, down twice.... or whatever.... you will get consistency.

i trickle quite a bit... and when your in a rhythm it goes fast....

Mine is always off too. I finally bought a higher end digital scale and have my trickler set up beside it. I can load to the .02 of a grain pretty quickly now.

Believe it or not the cheap Lee perfect powder measure does the best job at throwing Varget I've found. I couldn't believe it years ago when I was told that a $19.00 plastic measure would do better than my $300+ Harrold but it does.

That's what I do. Works great for me and once you get your rhythm down it doesn't take long to load cases and it's accurate.

RL15 runs thru my measure, much better than Varget, which is why I use it.

I love the Lee measure as well.
I have two.
The best part is that it does not cut or crush kernels of powder.

But, Varget is much better than RL15, which is why I use it.

Seriously, I have no issues throwing Varget accurately. If the throw feels different at all (cut kernel, etc.), I dump it and throw another charge. I know a lot of people have problems with it - it must just depend on the powder thrower.

Believe me I will. You can have your RL15 and it's temp sensitivity. Having to shoot around the country at different ranges, different elevation, and different temps I have found the Hodgdon Extreme line, which Varget is part, is very, very consistent. That's why I use Varget in the .308, H4350 in the .,243 and 6.5 Creedmoor and H1000 in the 300WM.

Metering isn't a big deal either as like I said I trickle each charge again for consistency.

I found I can throw Varget accurately enough for production work anytime The optimal charge weight window is 0.3 gr or larger. {Redding BR30 or 30BR -- forgot which)

For the more accurate work in load development, you have to measure anyways.

I like to use the Chargemaster... although it was kindof pricey... it makes a WORLD of difference. Its like having an extra person helping you.

I've been throwing my loads and checking every tenth or so, and it seemed to be working out well...........until I shot my Smack the Smiley today.
I haven't shot on paper from a solid prone position in a long time (been mostly steel or paper in matches where my position hasn't been allowed to be very nice)-and I was very disappointed with the results.
I'm going back to tossing under/trickling up for sure.

I may start a quest for a chargemaster or such soon.

I have a Redding 3-BR with the baffle and the extended powder tube. I check every 25 throws or so and it is always very close to right on. I never measure every charge anymore. After reading this thread I'll start checking after every five just to confirm it's being as consistent as I think it is.

I just bought a Lyman DPS III and loaded some Varget last night. Use the little restrictor insert and set the setpoint 0.1 low and it hits it 9 times out of 10.
