I did use the search function.......but I've got a rifle that's been problematic since I got it. The bolt handle has broke for the second time. The first break obviously happened because the solder job was inadequate. It broke on me on a hunting trip again while chambering a round.....like it was on there with bubblegum.

Anyways, does anybody know a gunsmith who can Tig my handle on and do a good job?
    Thanks,, Phillip

Chad, on that link you included your bolt fluting setup is a manual one, correct? can you show another pic of the turning feeding arrangement. Thanks

I had that happen to my bolt handle after soldering it on as well. I don't think the solder holds up to the jarring of rounds being chambered and extracted.

When it broke, I JB welded the hell out of the hole in the handle, and the pin on the knob of the tactical bolt knob, and haven't had a problem since. Its held up fine for several hundred rounds now.

Might give that a whirl if looking for a quick fix...

It's not manual. I'm using my 4th axis to cut the helix. 240* rotation on these.

Solder (if its the right kind and done right) is plenty strong enough for a bolt handle.

    A cold joint will fail.
One gotten too hot will also fail. -and it can potentially draw back the heat treat on the cocking cam which is poison.

If you use the right stuff it's plenty strong. The TIG process is just added insurance.

FWIW the stuff you sweat a pipe with ISN'T the solder you want to use for this kind of job.

If we are talking about a Remington 700 bolt it was quite the rage to use set/allen/torx screws to help the solder job hold. Seems like every tactical smith had that on his menu.

I second Nate. I had him weld a Holland tactical bolt handle on my 700. Excellent job and it does not look like every other rifle at the range.

If you want the smith who is the best welder also, go to
    www.savagegunsmithing.com.
The Smith, Scott Null is not only a Master Smith, but a Master welder also. His bolt handles don't come off, period.
His turn around is reasonable considering how busy he is and he won't rape you price wise either.

With regard to cold welds failing are we talking about handles joined like two different pieces of metal at one contact point? I have the Tac Ops knob on mine with the pin that sits inside a hole drilled in the original handle. I then cold welded the shit out of that and its been fine thus far.

I used some steel silver solder for the soldering job but it didn't last. I might give that another go with some different solder if the cold joint fails on me. Also have a spare bolt handle on its way that I may send out to have threaded.

Guys with all due respects to the rest us Chad takes things to the next level. Chad is where I intend to be in a about 3 years, I just need to get more established.
