Gunsmithing tikka barrel life 22-250?

Re: tikka barrel life 22-250?

It is a great varmint rd or with fast twist and heavy bullets fine for deer as well. Barrel life on mine runs about 1500 then falls off fast.

Re: tikka barrel life 22-250?

1500, thats sucks . guess by then i could have saved up to re barrel . only reason was thinking 22-250 is i wont have to change bolt head . "i think" not sure conture barrel i will go with when i swap it , may go m24 style barrel . and mcmillan stock. just hate the wait time on mcmillan !

Re: tikka barrel life 22-250?

The 22-250 is a lot of fun but most factory rifles don't have the twist rate to support heavy bullets in them. I don't know if this is the case with the Tikka but that's a major thing to check before buying it.

The nice thing about getting the 243 right now is that you don't need to change out equipment when you rebarrel.

If you're worried about wait times, then buy whichever one you like now and put the barrel, stock, and other accessories on order. As they begin filtering in over the next 5-9 months you get to shoot the rifle, hone skills, and once the parts are all in the pile then you can ship it all off to the gunsmith with a large reduction in lead time.

Re: tikka barrel life 22-250?

The only thing you need to worry about going from a .22-250 is the feeding. The .22-250 has a lot more taper than the .243. But, your gunsmith should know this and allow for it when he rebarrels. If you think it's a non-issue going from a 5 rd. gun to a single feed, it is. Nothing more frustrating than having to un-jam, then rechamber each round. It is an issue that can be dealt with though.

Re: tikka barrel life 22-250?

Are you totally dedicated on the Tikka? They'r great rifles but IF you aren't you may consider the TC Icon Precision Hunter or standard icon decent rifle comes with an moa guarantee.
.
Should be able to find the 243 your looking for that way

Re: tikka barrel life 22-250?

Tikkas are great rifles. So are many others out there. To answer your question about 22-250 performance and barrel life, I know of a lot of deer and hogs, not to mention coyotes, that got smoked by the 22-250. Shot placement and bullet type is key but it works. I have two 220 Swifts that are over 1500 rounds with no problems. I think the 22-250 should last 2-3000rounds before troubles arise.

No chance...

3500+ FPS is serious barrel burning territory. Maybe a 1000 and your done.
