Can I use a Sako TRG factory dovetail Spuhr Mount on a Tikka T3 .260 sporter without alterations to the ejection port?

I read that some guys had issues in the LA calibers using this mount T3's.

Thanks for the help.

Hi.

I've been reading this forum for a while, but just now took the plunge and registered.

Anyway, I am looking to mount a March FX 5-40x56 scope to my Tikka T3 tactical. As I understand, I can use the Spuhr mount for a TRG, but I have to mill off alittle of the ejection port bottom.

First off, the scope is 34mm tube. Would the ST-4701 be the correct model for what I wish to do?

Second, does anyone have any instructions on how to and how much to mill off the ejection port?

I've tried to ask Mr. Spuhr himself, but I guess he's busy these days.

Since I am so patient, I went ahead and ordered the ST-4701. From what I can piece together with the information I can find on the net, it should work.

Here is a few Pictures of my T3 in 6,5 with the ejectionport opened 2,5mm or 1/10".
I am using the ST-4701

Thanks for the photos. I haven't got my new scope yet, but I tested the mount, and the ejection port definitely needs lowering. It looks like you've also flared it a little at the front. Is that correct? How did you go about the lowering? What kind of tool did you use?

No the mod is only if you're using the Spuhr mount. The T3 runs fine with traditional rail/rings setups. A little work on the ejection port wouldn't hurt though, I personally like to be able to get my grubby fingers in there if necessary.

Hi. One more question on this. I have tested this for a while now on two different rifles. One in 300wm and one in 308 win. On the 300wm I have lowered the ejection port by almost 4 mm. The 308 I have done nothing to. Both have good clearance, but every now and then a cartridge gets hung up and doesn't eject properly. It seems to me that it wouldn't matter how much more i lower the port. It seems to me the end of the shell hits the mount while it is still in contact with the extractor and the ejection is disturbed. Any tips? I feel it is generally ok, but for hunting or tactical competitions, I can't really trust it.

I am not surprised by about the issues with the .308 as you have done nothing to the port.
My 6,5x55 (almost identical casediameter as .308) have fired well over 4000 rounds without any issues.
We have sold quite a number of mounts here in Sweden that is mounted on T3 with opened ejectionports and I have not heard a single complain. But 95% is 6.5x55 and .308 and very few is .300 WM.

Ok, Thanks for answering. I just thought i'd ask before I did any more altering. The. 300 I am converting to 6,5 RSAUM, so I'll see how that works before I do anything else with that rifle.

I addition to lowering the port .100" on .308 sized actions, I also bevel the bottom of the clamp (directly above the ejection port) on the Spuhr mount (sorry Hakan, you make a very fine product, I have many!).

On the .223 size action, the bevel on the clamp is all that's needed, no port lowering is necessary.

My .223 match gun has many thousands of reliable rounds through it, including many local match 1st place finishes and a top 10 finish in a major PRS series match (2012 Precision Tactical Solutions @ Cookeville, TN).

It is a factory stock Tikka T3 .223 8" twist SS Varmint barrelled action bolted into Justin's outstanding KRG Whiskey III stock.

Old thread but newly relevant to me. I have a S&B ultrashort in a spuhr mount I would like to mount on a Tikka t3 in 300wsm. I have a similar issue with the fired case not ejecting and falling back into the breach due to contact with the mount. Is it likely to be the same solution? Mill out the port? Or with the new rings from spuhr (I want to mount a red dot on it) work without the need to modify the ejection port? Thanks in advance.
