Time to move quickly...

That was a good 'treek.

I don't think its fake. Remember, we over engineer the shit out of everything by default. I even do it and I don't know Im doing it.

Betting this was the end result of building in drainage and air vents that were connected within the wall to allow for positive air flow in case it needed to move a ton of water and not become bogged down due to zero pressure/being full of water.

With that said, I would totally have stood there telling you about the genius level shit I designed on how to kill everyone trying to put a grenade in there.

I think @TheGerman is correct. It's a real air vent but shaped like ))= or ]]= to allow air in and water out if necessary, but the lower hole has the extra function of being anti-grenade. Whether or not it's intentional design is my question. I'm sure it could be, but the bunker is at Normandy and surely this sneaky bit of engineering would be more well known after almost eighty years?

Matter of fact, here's one of the bunkers at Pointe du Hoc:

Double vents next to the doors. Other parts of the bunker complex only have one visible vent, but also are more open. I really don't think those were intentionally designed to make a grenade roll back out, because if it did you'd have a potentially weakened doorframe, or door, when it went off.

And besides, you'd A. have engineers and sappers with satchel charges to blow the door if you really had to get in there, and B. have Mark III concussion grenades and flamethrowers to provide bunker-suppression. Chucking a Mk II into an air vent where you don't know what's on the other side is not the BEST way to clear out a bunker. Comp B in there, though, that might do something...

I could see those being 'Return to sender' holes in a last ditch deterrent to getting the doors breeched.

Using the process of elimination, I can't see any other purpose they would serve.
