ok so i have been reading alot of your guys post and got a lot of good info. so i have a ranch i could shot long range at (2000 meters +). i got a remington .308 with a swfa ss 10x42 scope. running 168smk bullets with 42gr of varget .what tips could you give for shooting out to 1000 to 1200 meters. anything helps thanks guys

Re: tips for the new guy

Tips for you:

Get a different caliber

Get a different bullet if you intend on shooting the 308

You arent gonna get anywhere close to accurate hits with the 308 @ 2000+ meters(despite what Mark Larue says)

The 168 SMks suck huge ass at distance, they are good inside about 700yds but tend to fall apart after that

Re: tips for the new guy

just trying to get to 1000 meters . we have a 300wm for the long long shots. love shooting the .308 longest shot right now is at 850 meter but shes falling fast at that range .

Re: tips for the new guy

when i shot a target cold bore at 1 click i used federal premium nosler partition 180 grain high energy bullet i didnt have enough elevation to get to 1000 meters so i zeroed to 900 and calculated what the mil hold would be. i dont know if they sell those high energy rounds anymore so use 175 smk gold medal match by federal try 43.75 MOA if you can dial it if not try 35.75 to 900 meters and hold 2.3 mils see if that works if its not dead on it should be close enough for you to make the adjustment

Re: tips for the new guy

I think that by falling fast at 850, your load is telling you 'Uncle'. To me the bullet is light, and maybe so is the charge.

The .308 should reach 1000yd with the 175SMK and 45.0gr of Varget. A short barrel (under 24") could impose additonal distance limits. In most rifles this should be a stout but safe load, work up to it paying close attention for signs of excess pressures. Try a few FGMM .308M2 (?) (Fed Gold Medal .308/175SMK) loads and compare your fired cases to those. If the edges of your fired primers are flattened more square, you might want back off your charge until they're not.

Re: tips for the new guy

I just went to Thunder Valley Precision in OH yesterday. Im running a 700 5R 308 24" bbl. I had a friend load some Lapua brass Federal 210 primers, 45 gr of Winchester 748 and Hornady 168 gr BTHP national match. Ive never shot over 100 yards until yesterday. They printed out a dope sheet and we shot at 4 stations, 4 targets per station at various yards. I couldnt get the 1165 yard target (we only had 3 shots per target and had to move on) but I did hit 925, 950, and the 1050 yard target. The targets were 12"x12" steel. I was tickled to hit over 1000. After the training they let us free shoot at the 1000 yard range, and after I found the sweet spot, I could ring the 1000 yard steel like clockwork. The 1100 and 1200 yard target....I couldnt even make a call on where it was hitting. I think 11-1200 is pushing limits for a 168gr bullet. The owner says the hot ticket is 168gr Vmax with 44-45gr of Varget.
Good Luck

When did Mark say that? Just curious.

Re: tips for the new guy

Biggest thing as others have said is your bullet. Try the 175 SMK. These usually work well and are easy to find. I'm running these around 2650 fps (43 gr Varget) and getting second round hits out to 1000-1100 yards as long as the wind isn't too bad. I would consider that to be about it though.
