Rifle Scopes TMR used for different mil values?

I have a scope set up with a Tactical Milling Reticle, it is a rear focal plane scope (must be set at max magnification for proper use of the TMR).

I was playing with the idea that if I set the scope at half of the maximum magnification, I would double the mils that each hash mark represents...

Is this correct? Does this work only in theory?

I ask because I figured that instead of only having 5 mil hold over, I'd have 10 mil hold over... You know, for those extra long shots?

It'll work in theory, but you'll have to actually measure your reticle subtensions against a known scale since 9x on the scope may only be 8.8x for real. Half power, in that case may be 4.4x not 4.5x and so you'll have to make appropriate correction to mil accurately.
