Gunsmithing To all Enfield No.4 Mk1 owners...

Hey folks,

this goes out to all Enfield No.4 Mk1 owners.

I need to find the original muzzle diameter for the Mk1 for a project and you guys could help me out here.

I measured two barrels and those had different diameters. One was a Longbranch 1945 and the other was a customer supplied barreled action (date unknown).

The Longbranch had Ø15,4mm diameter (.606) and the other had Ø15,20mm (.598).

Which is the most common diameter, are there even other diameters?

You might try posting in the vintage sniper forum.

I believe the constraining factor would be the diameter of the opening of the bayonet. My guess is that as long as the bayonet would fit it would pass.

You might also try contacting Mr. Ian Skennerton, http://www.skennerton.com/ He probably is the god of S.M.L.E. knowledge. It's been a number of years ago but I wrote him with a question about some .303 ammo and somewhere around here I still have the letter he sent me with the info.

I had four and they measure .5947 & .5950 and are British mfg. I have one Savage at .6045 and one Longbranch at .5930 Hope this helps.

Yep, just depends what year it was made and if it is a two, five or six groove barrel.

OP Your barrels are within spec for Enfield production. No use anguishing over a couple of thousandths either way. As long as the bayonet goes on, you're good to go. Get it done and get shooting.
