First, I hope nothing happens and everyone reading this has contacted their representatives to ensure our rights are not infringed upon. Now that the precursor is out of the way, on to my question.

If you could buy AR lowers at Nov. 2012 prices, is it smarter to buy them now or wait and see what happens in the future?

Me and a family member have been discussing the issue and I'm just curious what other hide members thoughts are on the subject. Keep in mind we're not talking about purchasing numerous lowers, just a single lower for a custom build.

My thoughts are that if you want one, and can get it at a decent price, get it now. For less than 150$, why take the chance that you could be left out or have to pay inflated prices? There is no guarantee that the supply of lowers will catch up with demand before any legislation may or may not pass.

The family member feels that it is better to wait because parts are scarce right now and he feels that a ban will not be passed.

I get that there may be some deals out there if a ban isn't passed, but is saving a potential 35$ in the future worth possibly having to pay 400$ or more for it if a ban is put in place? I've never taken an economics class, but it seems like a no brainer to me. I think he's potentially making a big mistake, but he's set in his thought process.

Thoughts?

It depends, are you willing to bet the $35 bucks on the prospect of things calming down, or do you think it is worth the $35 to get it now and have the part if some lame legislation gets passed?

I personally spent the extra $40 just to be sure.

Re: To buy or not to buy

This is a simple question to answer...If you want to do a build and you can get a lower for the $150 you quoted there is absolutely no question that you should go ahead and buy it. Why not?

Re: To buy or not to buy

I'd like to tag on to this topic with a little different twist. I ordered an LMT LM8MWS last summer and it is due to arrive next month. Assuming no ban could get passed that quickly, is it wise or unwise to complete the purchase? Obviously, if no ban occurs, I've got the rifle I wanted. On the other hand, I may have a $3000 rifle that can't be transferred and will require NFA registration (and possible confiscation). I agree with the responses about the OP buying the lowers, but this is a lot bigger investment.

MJY65, if you don't want it now I will take it. If I were you I would buy it and not worry about them not being transferrable or them being confiscated. I see those two options having no chance of becoming law. If by some chance they do and you are young these laws can go away when everyone realizes again that they do not work.

If there is a confiscation you are going to wish you had that rifle because things might get a little messy. I personally think we will see some kind of ban, but it will have a sunset date like the last one. It will have no effect on stopping these crimes and it will not be renewed. Buy your new gun, shoot it and be happy.

Re: To buy or not to buy

Here's a different spin on things. Lets say money is irrelevant and you buy now. You have a fancy paper weight at the moment. I put together a budget build months ago with a used upper, used lower etc etc. The problem I'm running into is that I have everything but a BCG. Thankfully I have a 22 conversion that is making this into a trainer gun, but it's not fully mission capable as a 5.56. If you do not have the ability to finish the gun, you may be in for a wait.
For me I am hoping that this is a passing frenzy and things will calm down, as I hope for all of our sake. Definitely look into a complete rifle or have all your ducks in a row to complete a build.
MJY65, you will have a complete gun coming, get it. Do you think for a second that if some BS ban is passed and you would have to do an NFA transfer that there will not be people out there that would be willing to do so? I highly suggest you follow through with your purchase. There will always be buyers theoretically.
