I am thinking hard about swapping my 3.5-10x mk4 leupold for a vortex 4-16x FFP scope.

I plan to use this as a dedicated precision rifle, but I don't see many scopes that big on 20" AR's.

Is there something else I am missing? I have a FFP NF on my .308 and love the FFP so that is why I am looking to swap.

Does any one have experience with the 4-16x FFP vortex viper pst?

Don't know of any scope that is too much for any caliber.

The low is only .5 higher than your current so you still have a decent low setting.

What is your reason for wanting to change?

Too much scope?
No such thing, unless you're in pea soup mirage central.

My bolt gun is going to be wearing a 4.5-30x50. I, personally, like seeing what I'm aiming at...

The moa/mil is a bother now that I am used to the mil/mil setup of my nf. I want to get both optics set up similar. The FFP is nice because I rarely ever shoot on max power, I normally stay around 8-12x. I will still be able to range and holdover correctly at the lower powers.

I am hoping the vortex will have more defined "clicks", the leupolds are to mushy for me.

Also, the vortex will allow me to come out several hundred dollars ahead, but have a better optic for my needs.

Re: Too much scope for a .223?

I run either my Vortex Razor 5X20 or my S&B 5X25 on my dedicated precision AR. Although you may not need that much power for a precision AR you will find that you spend less time going back and forth from your rifle to a spotting scope to view your results.

As previously stated, “It’s better to have and not need, than need and not have”... but that's just my $0.02.

Re: Too much scope for a .223?

Your rifle put whatever scope you want on it. 4-16 PST isn't an overly large or heavy scope so it's not like it'll weigh down your rifle considerably more than a leupie.

FWIW I have an IOR 2.5-10FFP on my 18" 223 AR. If I didn't have that I'd have a ss 3-9ffp.

Re: Too much scope for a .223?

Wait, let me get this straight... You are asking if a Vortex PST is too much scope for a .223?

You realize that this is the Hide, and guys here have $3k+ scopes on their .22s, right?

What kind of answer were you expecting? lol

Re: Too much scope for a .223?

If you are carrying from the car to a bench you will have no issues put the hubble on there. If you are carrying all day on patrol oz. matter.

I happen to have that very scope on my .223, its a 20 inch bolt gun.

So far it's become one of my favorite combinations, I love the FFP MIL/MIL of the Vortex. And the 20 inch .223 goes a long way with that kind of glass on it.

If you would like my opinion on the scope, you can read my review here. If you would like to read up more about shooting a 20" .223 with a PST on it, then you can read my build thread, there is alot of information about it there. And range reports. You wont be disappointed.

Re: Too much scope for a .223?

I think you will appreciate the power because no matter what the distance if you can see it, it sure is alot easier to put a round on target.

Being one of those 3K scope guys myself, I have to agree with the above statement.

Re: Too much scope for a .223?

The main thing I am debating over is the actual size of the scope. The higher magnification and the additional features are the reason I am considering the model I am.

I would just like to be sure my ar will remain somewhat handy. I have been using this rifle lately in some precision rifle matches that involve movement and alternate shooting positions.

I think my first post made it sound to much like the higher mag was the issue, but the actual size is what I am unsure of.

Re: Too much scope for a .223?

the more the USEABLE magnification, the better. if this is a precision unit, then you have no need for a large FOV (unless you plan on missing a lot and need to spot your misses)

don't listen to the guys that say 1x per 100yds...that's horsecrap for 99% of people. sure you CAN shoot 10x @ 1000yds...but if you have the option to shoot it @ 25x's....why wouldn't you?

Re: Too much scope for a .223?

I've got a 5-20 on mine....more magnification than my precision bolt guns. The main reason is because I use the gun shooting little stuff at long distance.
