Heading to Murray State in June for gunsmithing school and still haven't received the required tool list. Other than an action and barrel, does anyone know what the student (me) is required to bring? Cutting tools, reamer holder, dial indicators, ext...? I've got a lil while, but would like to start getting everything together.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Tools for school

If they are like most trade schools they want you to buy your stuff through them. (that way they make a few bucks at it too)

Just bring a Visa and be prepared to thaw it out.

IF it were me:

once your their, get the list and start hammering the industrial supply catalogs.

You'll likely save a few bucks.

Give this guy a try:

Steve Kusk at MSC industrial. He's my sales rep and treats me pretty good. Might as well get something going with them now as they will become a lifeline as you progress along in this trade.

Good luck.

Re: Tools for school

Chad,
Thanks for the reply and been enjoying your post. This will be the NRA summer program. I'll need to have it ahead of time, so I'm trying to get started. Mainly just trying to figure out what to start putting together that I don't already have. I'll deff put Steve's name in my notebook for the future.
Thanks again,
Tony

Re: Tools for school

The Course director, Dean Arnold is a great guy. I took a summer course there a few years ago. They have a very good degree program and great resources.
There should be a reference on their website for tools needed, if not contact Mr. Arnold directly.
Good luck with the course, you will have fun and learn a lot from them.

Re: Tools for school

Just a thought. Take the class at Robert Gradous Rifles. That way you can build a rifle with his tools. That way you can see what tools suit you better. You can learn a lot from Mr. Gradous in the mean time.

Re: Tools for school

Thanks for the reply's. I'd love to go see Gradous. Due to time and $, this is probly the best route for me right now. Due to having a full time job, and custody of my son, its the time travel and cost that makes it all tricky. This just happen to work out where my son will be with his mother for her summer possession period. When time and money work out, I will be planning a trip to see Robert if he is still doing the instruction. Never heard of having to much instruction/ knowledge.

Re: Tools for school

Trigger Time.....if you're taking the lathe and milling classes then I'll see you in May/June! I talked to Brandon Miller on the phone on Tuesday and it looks like they'll be sending out the supply list to everyone shortly. I'm taking two weeks vacation to make this before purchasing a lathe and figure it's a good place to start.

Re: Tools for school

I think He must have called everyone on Tuesday. Already got my lathe and have a deal on a mill that I'll have shortly. Skipping the basic class, but I'll be in the rifle rebarreling one. Wish I would have taken the mill class now, but I don't know if my schedule and work would handle another week off.
