I have the oppurtunity to trade a ARt15 I built a few years ago. It is nothing special, it is a Spikes lower with milspec parts and a 16" Rock River upper. I have some misc. Magpul dodads on it. I have a buddy that has a carbine length DPMS AR10 that wants to trade as he does more CQB training. I have a 308 bolt gun and shoot tactical comps. I like the concept of having one type of ammo to deal with. I would eventually want to have the gun rebarrelled at around 20-24". Could I have the new barrel chambered with the same reamer as my bolt gun when i rebarrel. What if any advantages to reloading for both guns would I see until i rebarreled the gun? How does 308 and 7.62 work?

My DPMS SASS is an awesome rifle... consistantly hit clays at 600yds. I would say go for it! but when I did rebarrel it I would not put that broomstick on it I would by a kick ass 18in barrel and dive on. BTW 308 and 7.62 are the same thing 308 is actually 7.62X51 where at AK's shoot a 7.62X39 and the dragonoff or however you spell it is 7.62X54 the actual bullet is compatable in all 3 guns.

Kinda sorta, but not really. You can fire 7.62x51 NATO rounds from a .308WIN chamber, but it is not recommended to shoot .308WIN rounds from a 7.62x51 NATO chamber.

The 7.62x51 NATO chambers are headpsaced slightly longer than your average .308WIN and can lead to excessive headspace (i.e. excessive pressure) issues. Vice-versa, worst case scenario is your .308WIN bolt won't close on the slightly longer 7.62x52 NATO cartridge.

In regards to the trade - I would go for it. AR-15's make great short range guns , but for a true battle rifle the .308WIN definitely excels...

I know there is a difference between to two rounds related to head spacing. I researched a little and see that a new barrel could be chambered in .308 and that DPMS makes a .308 bilt carrier. I think I am going to do it. I have successfully shot 7.62 marked Federal 175 smk's out of my bolt gun, or should i say accurately, so I could make due with one kind of ammo. What kind of accuracy can i expect from 16" barrel?

Noted. I am not too familiar with the platform yet. I have only shot the gun a few times and never with optics or at any real distance. I am basically curious about the reliablity and the accuracy of the platform. I anticipate sinking some cash into eventually, but want to make sure it is a good trade.
