Anyone have advice on the best way to go about cleaning the bolt and raceways in a TRG-22? I feel I have the bases covered for cleaning the bore and break but I only wipe down the bolt with a clean cloth and that is about it. What else should I be doing?

Re: TRG-22 Cleaning

Clean the bolt of any carbon, brush the area around the firing pin and extractor and you are done. SAKO recommends removing the firing pin assembly before initially firing to remove any excess lubrication (mine sure didn't have much) from the factory. After a quick brush and light lube the firing pin assembly reconnects using the convenient SAKO tool (their firing pin disassembly tool is round and notched to fit over the bolt and allows very quick reassembly, SAKO part: S5740900). You do not have to disconnect the firing pin assembly for cleaning after each range session. Just clean the bolt, firing pin tip, and extractor, then lubricate lightly and you are done.

For the raceway I borrowed something from my Remington 700 kit. It's a Tipton Action and Chamber Cleaning Tool Set (Midaway item: 109658 about $10). The tool and associated cleaning pads makes raceway cleaning very easy. The TRG-22 is a great gun and easy to clean. Good luck.

Re: TRG-22 Cleaning

You don't need any special cleaning tools to get into the receiver raceways. Just take 2-3 Q-Tips and twist the heads together. Soak with solvent / cleaner and run them through the raceways. Sometimes, I'll wrap a cleaning patch around the heads on the bunch of Q-Tips.

The firing pin on the TRG-21/22 is massive with a very powerful spring. It is going to take a lot of crud to keep it from functioning. I take the bolt apart to clean only every other time I clean (after shooting). A short cleaning rod for .17 or .22 with similarly sized jag and patch can be used to clean the firing pin channel in the [disassembled] bolt.

Re: TRG-22 Cleaning

Thanks guys that is great advice. I did read the manual about disassembling the firing pin but figured it is still too soon for me to worry about that, maybe after another 500 rounds or so I will look at doing that.

The tips on cleaning the raceways was excellent. I will definitely be doing that after my next trip to the range!
