TRG-22 in .223 - Thoughts?

So, I bought a TRG-22 last year in .308 and had some custom spacers made for me, the rifle fits me like a glove and I am absolutely in love.

However, given the distances I shoot regularly (100-300yds), I really think that a .223 would be a great choice. I'm thinking of reaching out to GAP and seeing if they would be able to fit out a TRG-22 in .223.

I know that they have done several .260s and .243s, but those are just necked down .308s so all that was needed was a re-barrel and my idea would be a little more complicated. I know it would need a new barrel, new boltface, and modified magazines, but is my idea even feasible?

If it is something that can be done, I'd go with a Bartlein Medium Palma barrel, 1:7 twist, and I would just find a used TRG that would be the "donor" gun.

Thoughts?

Oh no worries! No way on earth I am getting rid of my current TRG-22, this would be an addition to the stable.

One of the things I like about the idea is that both of my long range rifles (I am primarily a pistol competitor) would be set up identically, which is a plus for muscle memory.

From all accounts, the KRG chassis is as good a fit, maybe better, than the TRG stock. </div></div>

Exactly what I was going to say. A fellow member Hellbender did this a few months ago with great results.

FWIW I really hate to admit that my T3 Scout (in it's OEM stock!!!) is just as accurate as my TRG22 and less picky about standard length loads. Don't know if everyone else is getting consistent sub-0.5 MOA performance or if mine is a fluke. I love the Tikka so much that I'm keeping an eye out for a 2nd Scout to leave as bone stock cause of an inbound XLR... of course, the local shop has two brand new T3 Tacs on clearance for $1299.

100-300Y? 22 rimfires are fun at those distances

Not so much with most centerfires. Certainly not 223 vs 308.

How about loading some 308 subsonics. That would give you some challenge.

Re: TRG-22 in .223 - Thoughts?

The Tikka .223 in a KRG chassis is just the ticket. I am working on a similar build, but am trying to get a barrel done in .14/223 wildcat, since I've wanted to play with a sub cal for a while.

I talked at length with Justin at KRG about doing a Sako 85 conversion (even bought the rifle), but after we spent a lot of time discussing the project, it was clear that the Tikka T3 is really the way to go.

Converting a standard TRG would be a bear. Between bolt face issues, magazine length/feed issues, etc... the Tikka is the way to go.

I've already got the KRG stock and chassis for my conversion. And it's built beautifully!

@hamstur... my older Sako Finnbear deer rifle in .270 is darn near as accurate at my TRG. Almost. It's by far the most accurate off-the-shelf, wood-stocked, carry around the woods in all weather deer rifle I've ever seen. It's got an old Kollmorgen 6x fixed dot scope on it. Tack driver.

Cheers,

Sirhr
